This is kinda scary, should I invest time on this synth? I guess this type lives or dies by their filters. I'm not an expert in evaluating filters, can anyone chime in?Juergen wrote: Mon Sep 04, 2023 9:17 am Here is my first test with the 2 Rule Synth
It's not in my top 50 favorite synths, but I'm pretty sure we'll have some great entries by the end of this month.

I would not rate the filters ...

That's a nice way of saying that you don't like itJuergen wrote: Mon Sep 04, 2023 9:17 am It's not in my top 50 favorite synths, but I'm pretty sure we'll have some great entries by the end of this month.
I just discovered these challenges and thought this is fun and a good opportunity to spend some time with a synth that only used to lie around unused on my computer. But the factory presets are mostly unusable for me. On the bright side, bad presets force me to improve my own sound design skills.
I noticed that my copy is outdated, time to get the lastest version. Is there a manual for 2rulesynth? Or only YouTube videos?

Guess, that won't win the challenge (I know, it's not an entry!), but that's the music I like!doctorbob wrote: Mon Sep 04, 2023 3:43 pm I would not rate the filters ...

Just a quick try to see what I could get from the synth - not trying too hard - will likely go the jazz route, but maybe forego the percussion in favour of more rhythmic notions in the instrumentation.

I'm truly surprised by the piano-like sound that you managed to squeeze out of that synth. Sounds really good.doctorbob wrote: Tue Sep 05, 2023 1:42 pm Just a quick try to see what I could get from the synth - not trying too hard - will likely go the jazz route, but maybe forego the percussion in favour of more rhythmic notions in the instrumentation.

Thanks. Needs a lot more work. I'll probably split the track to upper and lower registers and model the piano sound as per the register ... ie more a single string for low and 2 string damped and 3 string open for higher register notes.igorius wrote: Tue Sep 05, 2023 2:39 pm I'm truly surprised by the piano-like sound that you managed to squeeze out of that synth. First consideration: very difficult to make a good kick on this synth, but let's keep on trying
The pitch LFO even on sync doesn't seem to make consistent results on Inverted Saw, trying to fix that rn

Agreed. Modulation is a bit lacking inside the synth. Prob best to manage most (if not all) modulation via your DAW. Filter is not bestastrovibes wrote: Wed Sep 06, 2023 12:19 pm First consideration: very difficult to make a good kick on this synth, but let's keep on trying

Can we use like, a free pitch shifter to make sweeps? If not, I'll follow another songwriting path!doctorbob wrote: Wed Sep 06, 2023 3:52 pmAgreed. Modulation is a bit lacking inside the synth. But you can pitch the synth itself, using the pitch-wheel or modulators (LFOs/envelopes) on the pitch parameters inside the synth. This includes DAW-side LFOs/envelopes.

Outside of the synth, gating is allowed; non-destructive compression is allowed; and non-transformative EQ is allowed (no formant filters or other extreme peaks).
Keep in mind that you can use anything you want if it's built into the synth, which means that THIS month, you can use the synth's distortion, chorus, etc

Can I render a file from the synth and pitch it down using the DAW pitch settings? Even the rendering is super weird, I'm not getting consistent sounds from it.The filter sweeps seem to come out differently.
