Indeed, I rarely do the sandwich trick when there are other options. As well as Spectre, Reelbus 4 has a saturation EQ section which seems to work like this.

I also built a eurorack hardware implementation :D

It's quite common to do a similar thing for heavy guitar tones: the lows are cut and mids emphasised with an overdrive pedal, then go through a distorted preamp, then the output EQ and cabinet restore some low-end and cut the mids a bit.
