Indeed, I rarely do the sandwich trick when there are other options. I also built a eurorack hardware implementation
It's quite common to do a similar thing for heavy guitar tones: the lows are cut and mids emphasised with an overdrive pedal, then go through a distorted preamp, then the output EQ and cabinet restore some low-end and cut the mids a bit.
