Class AB means it works like a class A amp at low volume and as class B at high volume. It sounds like you get the distortion while it's at the top volume of it's class A behaviour, and it goes away when you put it louder.

What I suspect is that the amp is driven into mild distortion before it switches from class A to B behaviour. That could be a compromise by design. Perhaps if this distortion had to be avoided, then the output were only 5W instead of 25W.

That's just guessing, but I'm sure that "you get what you pay for". The cheap hifi amp in my living room is 3x the price of these monitors, and my passive budget monitors were twice the price. So in total you have paid one-fifth of what a decent budget setup costs. Then compromises must be made somewhere
Ahh okay, that makes sense! Yeah these were definitely low budget speakers haha. Perhaps time for an upgrade, anyway!

Hmm they look fine on the outside but I can try to take a look inside if I can figure out how to open it up. Seems like it's definitely either damage or a limitation of the speakers themselves. If it's damage though perhaps I can get it repaired. Will see!

One kind of odd thing is that the distortion only seems to happen with this particular audio file. Which is why initially I thought it might have had something to do with the audio itself. But I've gotten confirmation from several people now who don't hear it on their end, so I guess it has to be the speakers. Maybe something about the particular frequencies in this audio is bringing to light the damage or limitations of the speakers.

Anyway, really appreciate everyone for the help!

As I understand it, your monitors sound much better than what could be expected from such tiny boxes, due to DSP processing doing some compensation. Think of a correctional precise EQ tuned to the known dips & resonances of the speakers.

Now what if some particular frequency is boosted by it, which happens to be more than average present in that particular track. Combined with other things consequential of the design...

I could be very wrong of course ;-)
