if it is any consolation most of us thought so at the time too (early/mid '90s anyway, not sure about the kids today.) Great artists, stupid genre label.swilow11 wrote: Sun Jun 09, 2024 1:55 am Almost as edgy as a genre with the term "intelligent" in its name.

IDMforums.com used to be a really nice place for IDM composers and fans many years ago.
but it's changed a lot over the years.

I’ll post a question for now up for discussion: How did Actress make the metallic snares and the glitch riff in this track?
You can hear the 2 kinds of snares (which I think one is layered and the other is not) at 00:05 and 00:10, and the riff can be heard at 00:05

it sounds like a squeaky gate sample and an overdriven or bitcrushed synth drum tap or maybe a clap.
around 2008 there was an upsurge in found sample based music. The key to alot of that was taking "sloppy" sounds and just using them anyhow, kinda ignoring the roughness and using it anyhow. Or, just listening to an implied rhythm in a found sound (field sample) and using that as the basis for the whole track.
i could be wrong of course, but that's my take on it.

Crazy wave shaper and a comb filter. Would be doable with microtonic into some freeware. I'm guessing the "metallic" bit is the delay/ comb filter. The rest of the sound is very similar to an 808.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.
