El Juan is just excellent.sqigls wrote: Thu Sep 26, 2024 3:30 am El Juan has some saturation mojo, and it was free for months upon release.

Yes Orange Clip qualifies.careyletendre wrote: Wed Sep 25, 2024 11:53 pm How long before we see a plugin that emulates classic plugins for that distinctive early 2000s sound?
Does Orange Clip qualify?

An even stranger thing is this:

It's 179$ and apparently "the secret weapon" of Serban Ghenea. The strange thing about it is that it's basically a 1 to 1 copy of the OLD original Steinberg Magneto plugin, which in turn got turned into a digital only hardware box by SPL. The magic code in that plugin (and the hardware) was done by Cube-Tec. Heck you can even purchase their plugins still.
Note that Magneto 2 in later versions of Cubase was a completely new plugin and wasn't coded by Cube-Tec at all. Thus obviously it is very much inferior, right?
So yeah, exactly what some of us predicted is happening right now. The new generation is always looking for that old fairy dust and we just happen to live in an age of plugins so indeed.. there will most likely be a lot more of these popping up over the next decade. All it takes is an old celebrity telling that they used plugin "X" on a popular old 90's or early 00's track and it'll create a market for it. You see the exact same behavior happening in the photography sphere where old crappy digital cameras are suddenly cool.
It's human nature. This is a thing that will never change.

That was my original curiosity. Whether plugins from years past, with the DSP coding limitations of the day, will ever be considered to have a 'classic' sound and be emulated in the future.

Ahh....so that's the backstory on that. I demoed it, thought it sounded awful and passed immediately. Couldn't understand the hoopla. Come to find out it's the original Magneto plugin. Too funny!bmanic wrote: Thu Sep 26, 2024 11:36 pm

A simple click on the link to the product page would have answered that question for you - but hey, you do you, as per usual...jamcat wrote: Thu Sep 26, 2024 2:42 am Why would anyone spend $29.99 for that when they can buy the real L1 from Waves for $19.99?
Or better yet, get this identical L1 clone from George Yohng for free?
https://yohng.com/software/w1limit
Or best of all, avoid the L1 altogether!

"The fascination of Spectral Design / Steinberg plugins in today’s world, an Interview with the producer Georg Walt - The unique sound characteristics of plug-ins from the first generation is on risk to get lost.
The producer Georg Walt talks about why the sound of the plug-ins of that time is so special and how he manages to use them productively in current productions when interviewed by Stefan Zachau, Sound Engineer of Cube-Tec."

It is a pretty interesting concept. If you have FabFilter Pro-Mb and Melda's MSaturator, you can get really close to the same sound. The trick is to set Pro-MB first and set it up to have two bands, crossover at around 5kHz. Then sidechain the lower band from the upper bands range.. basically having the high frequencies above 5kHz controlling the lower band. Set the ratio of the low band really low and a very deep threshold. Then send this processing into MSaturator, basic default shape.legendCNCD wrote: Sat Sep 28, 2024 10:31 amI thought it sounded pretty ok but not much I could do with other tools either so...Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Fri Sep 27, 2024 4:36 pmAhh....so that's the backstory on that. It's a strangely usable process chain, especially for wide band audio. I got better results with these two plugins combined than I did with the actual plugin.

It's a boutique experience. You have to contact them and they'll quote you a price.. at least that is what I recall. And yes, it is at boutique prices.jamcat wrote: Sat Sep 28, 2024 3:28 pm I was able to find the old Spectral Design plugins on the Cube-Tec page, but I don't see anywhere to actually get them.

Instrument rather than effect, but does this meet the criteria?
Oberom is a sampled version of Oberon by Land of Cockaigne, a VST plugin that is an attempt to imitate the classic analog polysynths.
