Listening to the preset video, it doesn't sound particularly useful to me, which is possibly why it's cheap. It may be a different way of doing things but the results aren't stand-outs to my ears.

Agree with all of that, ESPECIALLY the UI bit, because there's so much room for everything! F that granite countertop slider, give me a set of knobs. I can add the automation in Bitwig, but it is bizarro that it's not built in. Imagine a few LFOs, envelopes and step sequencers. Seems unfinished.foosnark wrote: Thu Mar 13, 2025 1:31 pm Blech, Tracktion Download Manager. Sign in three separate times to eventually get to use the demo. But that aside...
Using a wavetable for distortion isn't common but isn't super innovative either. WMD Geiger Counter has been around since 2010. Several Eurorack modules can do table lookups with an audio source instead of an oscillator, and Bitwig Grid does it easily.
So with HATE I'm more excited about the additional FX than the wavetable distortion itself. At the intro price it's worth it just for the multi-FX.
But.
1. I really HATE having the wet/dry for each additional effect on a separate page from the other controls. I get that presenting the user initially with just a preset selector and a wet/dry was supposed to simplify things, but it just makes it more awkward. These sort of effects, overall, really seem well suited to people who want to tweak everything.
2. In modular, it is a very useful technique to mix your audio signal with an LFO and *then* go into the wavetable lookup. That provides a kind of phase modulation of the wavetable. It's surprising that Hate can't do this.
3. It's a shame you can't rearrange the wavetable distortion in the chain, because compressing or filtering etc. first can be useful. You need two instances to do that.
4. Lack of modulation internally is weird (anything with distortion loves an envelope follower especially), but easily resolved with the right host.
While writing this I started patching up two sine oscillators, an LFO and Transfer (wavetable distortion) in Bitwig Grid -- instant blissful growly drones. But then I put HATE after it, killed its wavetable mix and played with its other effects and was able to take it much further. So... I think I'm going to buy it, despite my complaints.

In all honesty, this thing really wakes up when you start modulating things... which is why we're all scratching our heads as to why this isn't a feature. If you have a DAW with modulation devices, you can really make some cool stuff with this.BONES wrote: Thu Mar 13, 2025 10:23 pm Listening to the preset video, it doesn't sound particularly useful to me, which is possibly why it's cheap. I just loaded up Audio Damage's Grind, and it's pretty good for someone who just wants that part and not all the rest. Only a single wavetable of 15 waveforms, but it's pretty good, and free.

Honestly at $35 it's pretty much a no brainer for me. I don't seriously love any software based distortions out there, but between the dozen or so I have I can find things that are useful. So more choice is what it's all about here. Almost any DAW can let you draw modulation shapes as automation, and most DAWs with Clips excel at it, that's not close to a deal breaker for me.

Looks really cool, but without the modulation options, may as well just stick with Shaper Table. Sad

Yea I dunno, for me it's pretty bad, can't tell when a product is installed, but says one 'is' that
is definitely not. Downloads don't complete after 100% and it downloads 2 copies of the file
at a time. It's annoying that they force you to install it to download something like a demo
that isn't listed in your account. Once installed you can get a link for your browser to bypass
mngr, but only then... Oh and when I refresh the listings it logs me out.
Anyway, rant, rant!...
