ugo's response sparked my thinking and is helpful as phase settings have become clearer to me by reading this thread but actually i erred when using the term 'basic waveforms'. my bad. was thinking about things like how pwm would affect the sum of the waveforms soundwise, or maybe if you clipped one sinewave for example. ultimately looking for a bunch of these. i'm using vital free, ragnarok 2 or retrologue 2. you're right though about being able to hear instead of imagining the sounds. it seems like experimentation might be the way to go. glad to to find out it won't take hours.

Experimentation is definitely the way to go and, if it is an option for you, I highly recommend loading an oscilloscope and a frequency analyzer on the track. For some, just listening and conceptualizing is enough, but I find it extremely helpful to also be able to see what is happening to waveforms and frequencies. They can make it a lot easier to learn how waveforms interact under different conditions, understand what different effects and waveshapers are doing, and help you get a feel for how different types of synthesis actually work.Sweaty Ear wrote: Sun Aug 17, 2025 9:05 pm ugo's response sparked my thinking and is helpful as phase settings have become clearer to me by reading this thread but actually i erred when using the term 'basic waveforms'. my bad. was thinking about things like how pwm would affect the sum of the waveforms soundwise, or maybe if you clipped one sinewave for example. ultimately looking for a bunch of these. i'm using vital free, ragnarok 2 or retrologue 2. you're right though about being able to hear instead of imagining the sounds. it seems like experimentation might be the way to go. glad to to find out it won't take hours.
I prefer to set oscilloscopes fast so I can limit the view to a single cycle or two and see the waveform change in as close to real-time as possible. For frequency analyzers, I use a high resolution so it shows individual harmonics instead of just a curve.

ok. will have to learn oscilloscopes bc i kinda know what they are/do but haven't used one yet. thanks again.
