The level of quality in this area has gone up massively recently. I still regularly use a lot of oldies like DrumComputer, Microtonic, StiX & Stylus. And for loops, I still rely on Egoist & Transfuser. But I'm spoiled for choice with more recent stuff too, with the likes of Attack 3, Battalion, Bingo Drum Machine, Motherly, RANDOM Metal, Tekno, Triaz, Visco. It's such a joy making beats with any of those.

You sure know your stuff! I am interested in rolling my own physical membrane modeling synth for drums. I got it working but it sounds a little 8-bit or just lo-fi for some reason, not very crisp and clean yet.

I like some of Tekno's sound engines, but don't like others. Their kick drum engine is great. Can be super punchy or pillow soft. It can have a big, EDM-style smack attack, or be nice and rounded. It can be bright or dark. It can be an 808 or acoustic simulated kick. Their cymbals and snares, on the other hand, are not great. The snare can either be, ugh, filtered white noise or just tonal, almost like conga. I hope they open it up more for tweaking and improve some of oscillators and filters.

That’s a good question.

I’ve always hoped for more output bussing (like C, D etc) in addition to the already implemented A and B. I suppose the GUI could use some sprucing up and some under the hood stuff… like permitting mouse wheels to adjust parameters. But other than that, it is one little powerhouse of a drum synth, ain’t it?

Beatforge is pretty nice for relatively cheap, a cool thing it can do is RND swap all samples in a directory to a track as it plays.

Or at least it cycles through them. Not just pre-loaded samples you’ve selected.

Battalion is good. If you're fortunate enough to have it, Tremor is still mighty fine.

these are my top 2. And geist 2 was far and away the best drum sampler

I also like visco for it's uniqueness and versatility.

Visco is an amazing plugin that does insane things with resynthesized samples. Bingo is super fantastic but kind of visually insane in a bad way. I still use micro tonic and drumatic far more often than anything else for drum synthesis. They just work and have great sound quality. I also really really like the maschine drum synths (I'm guessing they use reaktor DSP). The maschine+ is one of the best hardware drum machines around due to these spiffy little plugins.

Stix is on my list as well as a couple of the roland drum machines that can ratchet. I have been trying to stock up on anything I can grab that has a sequencer to it that can accept outside midi including anything out of the reaktor library. I have been stocking up on alot of single hit drum synthesizers when they are free and are on sale.

I made my first try at setting up a ratchet with a tap delay and A single drum hit in vcv rack (also have the cherry audio one) where I manipulate the clock speed to set up the ratchet but it doesn't look like they have a good tap delay for that... Since I have a large number of delays maybe I have one where I can set up all the vcv rack single shot drum hits as vst's we will see..
