For me... Yamaha BB series. Most underrated bass. I'd go middle of the way (BB4) but even the cheapest one (BB2 series) are amazing.

In that process range, I’d look for a good deal on a MIM Fender or Squier Jazz Bass, or a G&L L-2000 Tribute.
