I would say compression is pretty essential in dance music. Especially DnB!! I doubt there's a DnB producer out there who doesn't compress the hell out of their basslines.
In Trance it's less important. Trance sounds are much more controlled in the first place, in contrast to DnB's wild, untamed basslines. The trouble with compresseion is, like proper mixing, it can take a lifetime to master. You won't do it in one evening.
