Back to the subject: you hear the singer plus whatever the producer & engineer did to it. Thats all. No such thing as one recipe for each singer, since a singer can change the producer plus engineer and you still recognise him/her. Also vice versa: some producers have a distinguishable sound that they can achieve with any singer.
Like if Carlos Santana picks up my guitar on my rig you will notice instantly it is him playing and not me. The pen does not contribute to the handwriting.
The same with synths.. Which synth does a certain sound? The question pops up a few times a week here but really is irrellevant. Jan Hammer once explained in an interview he could do his "Miami Vice lead guitar" synth sound on ANY synth with ANY effects. And he did...
I'd say you can have excellent hardware and produce crap with it, but a true genius can produce heavenly stuff with crap hardware.

Let's not forget that artists like Bono, and Tom Petty are said to record their vocals exclusively with SM58's and 57's respectively (sure they're going to be going through really good Pre's, compressors, EQs, etc, but don't just assume it's all about the mic). I agree with the sentiment that sometimes less really is more. Now as to a pro vocal sound, everything said above is good, but let's not forget a high samplerate (at least 96k), nice pre's (not emphasized enough here), and good A/D converters (again not emphasized enough). Once you have this stuff then layering will get you that pro/polished R&B or Pop sound, but until then you're just laying shit on top of shit and hoping that you'll be able to polish it. Remember, when you polish a turd what you get is a polished turd.
Now mind you, I'm not trying to be a total fidelity snob, I record at 44.1k and am perfectly happy with that for now (though I would like a better converter than what M-Audio gear offers), but I make this point because the big studios the artists the original poster referenced recorded in are all using very nice equipment on the way in (not to even mention the SSL consoles this stuff gets really polished in). Without a really good input section in your rig, you'll only be trying to approximate that sound and will probably never achieve it. The problem is that you'll most likely, in the process of trying to achieve said sound, end up degrading the signal/vocal even worse.

I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.
