Got it last night!! Beautiful work as always. Your bank releases are events! And please have yrself a beer or whatever but don't listen to wrench - at least for any significant period of time...like more than a few hours. :D

I don't know if I've seen yr Cameleon bank. Is it publically released? Other banks for other synths? Yr stuff is just so uber-musical. They cost money but they are gifts as well.

Are these samples for Rhino only? I'm looking for a good quality sample cd of the OB-Series, not the Matrix. I'm not too concerned with the format. Does anyone where I can find it?

Hrmmm...

What is the best format that is useable in the most samplers?

SF2?

Maybe Daniel should do one of those?

Makes perfectly good sense - I only make music with synths that connect with me. As for the programming, the stuff under the hood can make your life easier or make you cringe, and I know that some are definitely a lot more joy to work with than others.

My comment was almost a lark, and if you simply continued your good work with Rhino we'd all be happy. You happen to be one of about 2 programmers that really please my ears, and Tera is an interesting synth for me that also fills a niche that I use Rhino for: alternate tunings.

I certainly don't expect anything, but if T2 got your interest, I bet there would be cool results down the road...

Cheers, and thanks again for another bunch of musically useful patches,
Envoy

Right now, no plans exist for time off. However, the beer sounds like a good idea!

Using these samples in another synth might be possible in the future. Stay tuned for details as things come together.

An OB series CD is an interesting idea. ShareIt has a CD on demand service that could be used. However, the Matrix series is more flexible for interesting tones. And I always wanted to do a Yamaha CS-15/30 series since they have good modulation options.

My next few banks will not be analog in nature, though.

IMO, I see the OB-series like the Minimoog of polysynths, not so flexible but really good in what they can do (think brasses and strings). Sure Prophets and Jupiters have a wider sound palette but when you think of a 12db filter an OBX always come to mind. I wonder why nobody has bothered to emulate Oberheims in the VSTi world yet?

To put the Oberhiem stamp on your product (not the same as sampling an Oberheim instrument) one must recieve permission and pay liscensing fees. Therefore, a virtual Oberheim is impossible without Gibson's permission.

An OB-Xa would be a fun instrument to make a bank of, one day.

Post

Gibson, huh?! I thought Viscount had the Oberheim rights after that OB-12. I don't think it would be that hard to legally emulate Oberheims when you look at all these Prophets(3), Minimoogs(3) and ARPs(4) that are being emulated. I think Arturia is the only one that paid for the Moog stamp. Even Yamaha hasn't complained on the CS-80V yet. Also, Wine Country Sequential hasn't done anything to either Creamware or NI for their Prophet 5 emulations. I don't know who owns the ARP name currently...

Good point.

The problem I have with viritual synth emulations is that you're still stuck with 15+ year old sounds and ideas. Some synths never go out of style but why not update the feature set a little? I think the Mini Monsta is on the right track here; classic sounds and new possibilities. Lower CPU would be nice also.

It just seems easier to modify samples of an instrument in something like Rhino. Then you could do FM bells on the next patch without the hassle of loading another synth.

What do you think?

Post

Oh I definitely agree, added features and modulation options are always welcome as long as sound quality is a higher priority. I have all the Creamware vintage emulations for that reason. They've expanded they synths with a few more parameters and added an FX section but the raw instrument sound quality is uncompromised. So I mostly stay with Creamware synths if I want a vintage analog type of softsynth. The native VSTis are not bad, just not at the same level yet. On the other hand, using vintage samples like you do is another viable solution just a little more restricted I think. So tell me, are your samples just the plain raw sound of unfiltered oscillators? Are the filter sweeps using the filters from Rhino or are they sampled sweeps with the Oberheim filters?

A raw oscillator from different synths may have slightly different harmonic levels but unexotic waves sound similar. The filter is where all the action is!

90% of the Oberheim samples used in the CO series have some degree of Oberheim filter sweep. A few patches were run thru Rhino's filters due to the length of the sweep desired; the files would be too large. So, many times where you adjust a User Slider labeled "Filter Cutoff" you are actually adjusting the samples' start point which sounds very similar to adjusting the cutoff frequency.

Daniel, how about a Mega Mega Bundle (consisting of ALL your soundbanks)?

I already offer a "Mega Bundle" which is everything except for the "Classic Oberheim" series. The "Classic Oberheim" series is also available in it's own bundle. Those prices are as low as possible already.
