Yes, they'd still have created great music.

But-- and this is a big one for me-- would we have heard any of it? Would video have destroyed Bach's career? Would Mozart have died even younger?

Would Beethoven have composed even greater works with a hearing aid?

I always wonder about this-- where are the great ones of our generation? How can I hear them? Am I truly hearing the best that our time has to offer, or is there someone in rural Iowa that I'm missing out on?

why not an hippie Bach, jammin with a Hendrix-like fuzz?
or a headbangin' Slayer-educated Bartok?
Oh, Dvorak drumming on Simmons pads in the '80 would be lovely. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

kevvvvv i agree with you to a certain level
if a musician is very gifted and loves music but science as well, there is a chance the love for science, overpowers the love for music and so a potential great composer died a silent death

i believe tell-lie-vison
technique
friends and whole lot of other things can be mighty destractors ...

trying out everything and every possible technique was my destractor untill i found the love for tone back.

Maybe Bach could not come up with anything now because he is to busy trying out new vsti's.

And looking at nude women on the net.

i just spoke to Bach - cool guy - well atleast in my head - he told me he never dared to come out of the closet in his time

he told me he would be jamming with herby if he lived today - but he'd rather time travel to the years of zappa to explore all the nifty notation methods the computer offers with him :P :)

if Bach and co. were to be alive again, and in our time, they'd get involved in absolutely everything to do with music

they certainly wouldn't limit themselves to one genre while pissing on the others

but thank god Bach was born these few centuries ago or we wouldn't have das wohltemperierte klavier or the musical offering, or.., or.., or.., or.., or..,..

Maybe our culture can't create genius? Too many distrations while you grow up these days? Only thing I could be certain of is Bach would of been (And probably was) a black man.

more interestingly what if bach and all the other great composers had been born 100 years previous to their actual existence :-o what effect would this have had on the music of the future  :o
