no and I may of mispoke using the word phase tbh, I meant 90 degrees out of phase between the hoizontal and vertical plane...it's my understanding that vertical imagery would be determined really by surroundings and physical limitations. I would think the fact we hear the source being higher in altitude is do to reflections and mono reference points...in a virtual enviroment like headphones there is no accomodation for up or down (or back and fourth for that matter)but the horizontal plane still exists. That's why I think it would be a cross between phase and frequency, please bear in mind I'm only suggesting, not stating, as I really am not sure..it just seems logical to me...I don't think some kind of harmonic processing would be of much value...but again I could be wrong...Daven Hughes wrote:how would there be phase considerations? A sound directly overhead is not closer to one ear or the other, unlike a sound to our left or right.
Consider a sound source that moves from directly in front of you, up, then directly overhead. Where would the sound do a 90° phase shift? Maybe I'm confused about what you mean - I assume you mean the phase shift is the relative phases between left/right channels.

wouldn't reflections also play a major role in vertical perception of sound?Borogove wrote:The main way we hear vertical placement is that the shape of your head, ears, and shoulders acts as a complicated filter or EQ depending on the direction the sound is coming from. Google for "head related transfer function" or "HRTF" for more info. The trouble is, everyone's ears are shaped a little differently, so vertical-placement effects don't work quite the same for everyone.

Convolution seems to work somehow. See my post in other thread.

Roland/Boss has an effect in their hardware called RSS which can place sounds up and down. I demoed a Boos box and i had a sterio organ patch running into an effect that was chorus to reverb and RSS. The sound seemed to be in a plane between the speakers with an angelic shimmer on the ceiling. Just another thing a hardware company could do well with as software.
