This brings to mind something that I have often wondered: What is the easiest way to explore alternate tuning systems (e.g. meantone, well tempered, just intonation, etc.) in the digital world?

I remember that Roland had some piece of hardware in the 80s that could switch between tuning systems for historically accurate renderings of older music but I never actually played with it.

another topic, but lots of softsynths these days offer alternate tunings. Most use the TUN/ SCALA file system: Cameleon, Rhino, Albino2 to name a few. Theres a MIDI utility by Toby Bear that doe this for any VST synth as well. ( but you need something like EnergyXT for it to work)

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is the TUN/SCALA file system?

Get involved in sequencer vs. sequencer and Mac vs. PC wars.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

This is another J.S. Bach.

He used to be in Style Council but couldn't stand Paul Weller.

Bach would change his name to Hanz Zimmer and start writing for film :D

That would be my take. The man was a musical explorer. No way he would be screaming "Satan!" at the technology. He'd be taking it to cool places.

Friends of mine who are in an early music ensemble are about to spend a gawdawful amount of money for an electronic harpsichord that can be retuned at the flick of a switch.

Are there any samplers that can pull such tricks? Say, go from Equal Temperament in A=440 to 442, to Werckmeister III in 415?

Retuning is of course trivial for synths that are not sample based, but I have yet to hear the first one of those that can fool a harpsichord player into thinking it's a harpsichord.
