What i mostly use (not all at the same time though):
CoFX Kubik, Rock
Crystal (i know it's a CPU-Hog™)
Asynth
Synth1
Krakli Karnage, EffEm, VurtBox, mini-vurt
SuperwaveP8
Sfz
Drumatic3
and other free synths.
And effects like LoFi, Ambience, SimpleSqueese, CamelPhat free, Luxonix and many others.
I usually only have 3-6 synths with drums and 3-6 instances of effects.

You have barely the minimum recommended RAM to work with SX ,but to perform well something bettwen 1Gb ang 2Gb of RAM work a lot better.
Also there are a lot of semi pro sound cards costing a half that costs your sound blaster and will increase your performance a lot ,namely M-Audio sound cards.
@lsd ,I have HT enabled so therefore i recommend it ,the same way i recommend on new Mobos the an ACPI install or else you cannot enable HT on a standart PC.
Nevertheless there are so many variables ,like the sound card you´re using etc,
that the wisest thing to do is try it youself ,make an image of your Boot partition with Acronis TI or Ghost and start tinkering.
Good luck.

i checked out how much RAM was being used whilst cubase was playing a song (that maxed out my CPU) and it said it was only using 406mb of RAM
like i said i have 512mb of RAM
is it worth upgrading to 1gb still?

Only 406mb??? You did know that the operating system and the rest of the applications you are using take their share of the ram too? It's not like your 512mb's of ram are freely available to Cubase....
If Cubase is using 406mb's and you have only 512mb's in your PC, dear god help me it's about time you upgraded to 1024mb.

Churchy... 1 gig should be your MINIMUM amount of RAM not something that you're asking whether it's worth upgrading too.Churchy wrote:i checked out how much RAM was being used whilst cubase was playing a song (that maxed out my CPU) and it said it was only using 406mb of RAM

You said that Cubase was ONLY using 406 or RAM. Okay, but you still need to consider what Windows is using - which more or less will be almost another 100 meg. And if you're running any other programs besides Cubase and plugs, well, you get the picture.
GET MORE RAM!!!!
Plus, if you start using more samples in the future you're going to be in trouble.
It's possible that there may be other issues like your buffer settings, etc. But RAM is definitely something that you're low on. Even 1 gig would be okay I think. Much better than 512.

uhh shit sorry guys i was looking at the wrong thing
i was looking at the "performance" tab of the task manager
i think that means i was using 406mb TOTAL . actually 489mb total now
if i look under "processes" and check cubasesx.exe, it says it is using 248mb
what do yas think??

I think that the VSTi you´re using are not pushing a lot of notes at the same time.
it´s possile to work with 512 mb and do some music gut i doubt you can load more than two slots on HALion or another sampler .
However if that´s working for you don´t change a damn thing .it could be some kind of voodoo.
Also RAM should be proporcional to your CPU power :
if you run a 3.6ghz CPU and 4 UAD cards ,2Gb it´s the maximum under XP ,but all that power could use more memory for sure.

Well.simonmush wrote:`ve a new pc with following system requirements:

512 MB Ram

If I work now with cubase, with about 10 vsti`s and midi channels, its too much for the system the cpu is too weak. Especially Refx Vanguard needs very much cpu, even if i mute the other channels it needs about 70%!!
Is it real possible that this is too much for 2 Ghz or could there be another solution?I also tried to change the sound driver but theres no diffrence. Please help me I´m realy going crazy. Thanx a new pc with following
That's quite strange.
I work very often on a home-system with an Athlon Duron (latest build) 512 MB RAM and SB Live.
Vanguard *never* got a CPU hit of 70 %. Even not with 4 instances used (see no serious reason for using more instances of it inside one song) ...
Merely the Moog Modular V (with complex patch build) or a heavy load of the Korg Legacy Cell could ever produce around 50% of power eating on that system.
I am using Cubase SX too.
How did you get the strange idea, that Cubase SX is the problem?

yep, back to original problem. (nothing wrong with 512 MB, is just not nice and responsive)
cubase has one peculiarity with windows and asio which is that you have to set windows performance to "optimized for background services".
also, as stated above, the creative drivers just suck. kx is better but really complicated, i'd recommend asio4all, also try that with the onboard ac97 soundchip. creative cards are clocked at 48kHz, so use that, else you'll have to resample (badly) in realtime. (main difference of the emu-cards is that they do use an clock instead of the one on chip)
and then, also stated above, increase latency. nothing bad about 50 ms as long as you do not want to play.. this might decrease cpu by 2 or 3 times (if using 1.5 ms before)
then alter the cubase settings, raise audio-priority and try what happens if you disable lower latency.
lastly, this might also be a denormal problem, so try inserting some denormalizer plug. also try the plugins single (ie multiple instances), some of them might need to be set to 'old host behaviour'.
that you should have an almost empty system tray (ie no residen virus-checkers, firewalls, etc) should be a no-brainer.
tell us about it!

Thank you very much for your tips. I think i will go and buy more ram (1gig), and optimize my settings. I already lowered the latency, but i did this before i posted so i still have the trouble. For a new soundcard i have no money at the moment and i hope more ram will do the job so far. Do you think the processor is strong enough?

By all means: YES!simonmush wrote: Do you think the processor is strong enough?
I mean, you couldn't go that much further these days - so you'd just spend an unreasonably high amount of money for what you'd gain.
Get used to freezing tracks in SX before you update your CPU.
I wouldn't buy a new CPU unless it'd result in a significant performance boost.
