@Aktion: If you can name some of these Ukrainian instruments I will see if there's anything I have or am able to loan from someone. The Duduk is one of my favourite ethnic instruments as well, and I have ordered a professional one. I'll first learn how to play it.

@KoolKeys: I think I'll be recording that chanter this week.

@Caleb: That's exactly what I'm aiming at. Although for some instruments I am still looking for a nice hall to record in, for free of course.

To tell you the truth, I always prefer to add my own reverb artificially.

That might seem a little strange - but I just prefer it that way.

It purely depends on the instrument for me. I am thinking about recording " western movie-style" human whistling, but it just sounds really dull when recorded from a small distance in a dry space. The same for this Alpenhorn-like old ancient instrument I have.

:D

am looking forward to using them.. i promise to tell when i do too :D

Hi Herman. Thanks again. I have converted the ones i downloaded to sf2 for my own use. The bad thing is that when converted to sf2 the copyright and info about you is losted. I enter it manually, but maybe if you want, you can do a "silly" instrument called something like "Herman Witkam, raw" to ensure that when it is converted to another format, your info is not losted.
Well, only an idea.

@Aktion: There are some familliar instruments on that page as well. I have an ocarina, which is on the list of instruments to sample.

@Marce: Well, if you keep the file to yourself that would be fine.

Herman - don't you usually like hosting your stuff in different formats? Or were you just thinking Giga and Kontakt rather than SF2?

SF2 typically lacks the modulation features that really make a sampled instrument come alive. Giga and Kontakt are infinitely preferable to deep instrument sample designers.

Yes. Giga and Kontakt should be fine to my opinion. SF2 users can still convert the GS2 versions.

Because of some emails about the somewhat indistinct license there is now a license update. It now mentions that selling these samples and using them in a non-musical context is prohibited.

Ok, I now have pictures of the instruments I'm interested in. I got out my DVD of the song I linked to earlier and took some snapshots. I've met this guy and should have asked, but I didn't think of it. He does backing instruments like this alot.

Anyway, here are the pics. They are hosted on my site so you don't have to wait for them to load here if you don't want to.

Here is the main instrument I was talking about. It sounds like a bagpipe to me, without the drones. Maybe that's what it is. There are two views, one being a closeup since there appears to be some pipes on his lap.

The next two are of two different instruments apparently(judging by their different colors) and they are used in two different parts of the song. One does seem higher and more harsh in pitch to my ears. Here they are:

I hope you recognize them, at least the first one, as it's the instrument I was trying to tell you about the first time. But I have no idea. Thanks for your help!

It may be obvious to some what these are. I feel like I should know at least one of them, as I think I've seen them before. Oh, and the one you heard in that sound bite earlier was one of the second or third instrument shown. Are they just some kind of recorder or something? Thanks!

The first certainly looks like a bagpipe to me. There's a long, triangular-looking black bag under his left arm, see? I think it's Irish uileann pipes.

The other two look to me like pennywhistles or "tin" whistles. If that's it, they're charming instruments with a haunting, very Celtic tone that was dear to me part-Irish mother's heart. :-) Similar to a Tonette or Flutophone, but just a wee bit classier.

Play the two together and before long I'll be cryin' for the green hills of home that I've never seen...

If they are pennywhistles or tin whistles, are they the pipes that RAW waves already did? Did I just miss that? Is there a difference between the two pipes this guy used? I'm assuming there is since he switched them in the middle of a song.
