hey tracktion sounds like the way to go especially with new version comming out so i'd wait and get that.and plus does anyone new of any like dvds or something that can like "teach me" the software so i don't spend so much time playing it

Cubase SL3 .
A phenomenal app easy to use and understand .when you reach a point wich you think you need more you can get SX3 by upgrading.
you can do everything you do in SX on SL ,it will take just a little longer.

This is not completely true. It's known that FL Studio Audio track streaming from disk is quite bad I also run into problems when streaming multiple tracks whereas in energy XT, samplitude demo etc. I can run easily up to 30 mono tracks. FL studio seems to choke easily the first few times you hit play but after painstakingly listening trough the stuttering mess it actually runs quite fine (probably due to it loading a lot of it into ram for repeat playback).

I don't think you'll have much more luck with Audition or Sonar either. Fast RAM and lots of it, RAM is one of the best investments you can make, and it's one area where not skimping and getting good fast DDR dual channel memory is a win.B. More than 5 audio tracks and my system chokes... So its really a no-go
You can mix audio from disk in FL.
I think you're going to see this with everything.Orion

Ok, you got me on this one... I haven't tried it, but the interface looks interesting... I will download the demo.
But once you get used to it, it's really a good product in its own right. The price is great, and the developer is the most personally responsive of them all.

Well I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions thus far. I've tried the Traction 1.5 demo that happened to be on the latest Computer Music DVD, and wow... It's so straight-forward! It's really easy to get any type of composition up and running. And I actually like the fact that I don't need to mess with a "mixer". No crashes! I'm running 7 tracks of stereo streaming audio + effects using ASIO4ALL @ 11msec latency (which is great for my onboard sound)! No hiccups! Maybe there's not a problem with my system after all.
Yet I'm not sure if I want to spend $200 on the new version. Besides, I really dont need the features that are being added anyway.
EnergyXT is also great, certainly a better price @ $50. I find myself getting into "tinker" mode though, which is not the programs fault. I think the flexibility of the program to do just about anything is great! But hey, I think I might be doing something wrong here - I get hiccups in EnergyXT when using audio tracks. More than 3 stereo audio tracks (and no effects, mind you) and I get hiccups. I'm using the same ASIO settings as with Tracktion, I guess I'll have to check with the EXT folks.
Haven't gotten around to Podium yet, though I'll get to that this weekend hopefully. Thanks for your suggestions!

Well thats gonna be the retail price not street. The retail price of Tracktion now is 150 I think. But we pay 80. Also keep in mind that if you buy Tracktion now for 80 bux you'll get a better price for the update so you wont pay the full 200.bachmaninoff wrote:

Anyways, you should just go with Tracktion1 if it does everything you need. Dont feel like you have to upgrade to 2.0. EXT is another really good choice because its really cheep and Jorgen is constantly developing it.

first off, check your setup, there are quite a lot of "tweak xp for audio"-pages out there for you to google to..
with your laptop you should easily be able to do 10
audio and 5 vsti tracks with dynamic and eq inserts and global reverb and delay (depending on what you use, i did much more on my xp2200 (but with 1GB)[<-edit])
and although tracktion is nice, i'd think (and personally prefer) cubase would offer more of the versatility you want. and i suggest cubase SE [<-edit] to you, and wait a very little while until se3 comes out to grab the old one cheaply.
don't get me wrong. tracktion is nice and easy, and it IS a 'get it done'-stylee soft. but se is cheaper i think and already more versatile and upgradable if you want more. and se1 is VERY uncluttered and not getting in the way of making music.
anyway. solve your win-config probs first!!

SE is not cheaper than T1. And what does it offer that T1 doesnt? I can name A LOT of things T1 can do that SE doesnt. SE has a lot of limitations. honestly. i do not remember, it is a long time since i looked at tracktion. when i tried it, i just couldn't do too many things, so i binned it..
although it DID ring memories of a sequencer i really miss, named bars & pipes, which had the paradigm of dragging 'tools' (ie filters) into the in- and out-pipes of the tracks.
