well I have to say, I've followed the small bits of advice in this thread, and my drums sound shit...

I've no problem with the patterns, but when I start compressing the drums it all goes to shit. Can anyone suggest some good settings for the compressor (I know that may be fairly subjective), it's too many buttons and sliders for my tiny mind to comprehend :hihi:

Also, can anyone recommend some good distortion plugs for drums?

Maybe I'm just a fuckwit who should give up now, I dunno.

Firstly, read this!
http://psbg.emusician.com/ar/emusic_big_squeeze/

a tip that jdg brought more to my attention is to mix the compressed signal with the dry signal of the drums! try it out :)

also the best way to get familiar with the compressor is to apply it on audiofiles, this way you also see what happens and not just hear it, cause compression can be a hard thing to hear(at least for a untrained ear(like mine)),so a visualization can be handy!

somebody might give you some basic compressor settings for drums, but that wont help you getting more knowledge on the matter...

thats my tiny cents...

man there are really no good answers to these questions. I think "big beat" or call it anything, relies so heavily on beats (surprise) that the main art of it is making good drums. and its a whole artform on its own i think, so experimenting is the key. There are so many cool techniques for making the phat beat, i cant tell ;). but some hints: use very old beats from the 70's < the era of the coolest loops on earth. also multiband compression, and distorion. you must find the great hitting freq of the snare (somewhere at 100-200) a litle punch there mmmmmhhh snares
mmmhh basdrums
mmmmmmhh cymbals <makes the f**king world go 'round

and the bass must work together the drums

am i talkin stupid? dunno
just experiment!! good luck

Well I thought I'd have a play around with the good ideas on this thread, so I got a simple beat and phattened it up with Supercamelphat2 (nice name , Ben :hihi: )

Here is the raw beat:

Raw beat

And here is the beat with camelphat distortion, compression etc

Camelphatted Beat

And I had a mess about with the filter on camelphat and got this cool 'shouty' effect:

Camelphatted beat #2

Pretty cool, methinks, I think I might have to turn this into a tune 8)
