Is FL Studio a good companion for Sonar 4?

I use FL5 as a DX inside of Sonar, works great!

I use FL5 for drums since it's great at pattern-programming. I use Sonar to host all my VST-synths for the non-percussion.

I've got a lot of different synths/samplers for drums, but I always end up going back to FL5 to do my drums (hosted as DX in Sonar). However, I'm too attached to Sonar to leave it for the rest of the non-drums synths. :)

Such as? Sonar is pretty good at timestretching loops to project tempo, providing you remember to set the slice to at least 1/16. At it's wonderful for midi clip looping :)

Yes, I agree Sonar is good. I don't think there is anything I can do in FL5 that I can not do in Sonar. But that is not the point. What I found is that if you want to do certain things, certain tools are easier, more intuitive or have a better workflow. I used to play a lot with the old trackers on Amiga a long time ago, and I feel I was much more creative then because the workflow was more along the lines I needed. But in Sonar you have to start out with a much better idea what you really want, and it's much more cumbersome to experiment.

For instance, when I want to tweak drums on Sonar, it's an endless series of clicks to finally get to SlicyDrummer that is embedded in a pad in DR-008 that is embedded in a track's effects bin that is embedded in a track that is embedded somewhere in the project. See what I'm saying? Yes, it's flexible but it's also not very user-friendly.

At the same time I don't want to work in the loop-type way all the time. Therefore FL Studio by itself would not meet my needs. I like the flexibility of Sonar, but I just need some mindless, easy experimentation sometimes.

Well, after trying out the demo for a while, I was a bit dissapointed to see how much FL 5 added to CPU usage. For instance, on a relatively sparse Sonar project, the CPU hovers arounf 15%. As soon as I add FL 5 (ReWire/VST/DX - doesn't matter) the CPU usage goes up to 40%. That is with an EMPTY FL 5 project. Maybe it's just the demo version, it says it's version 5.0.

If you go to your synth rack in Sonar and toggle FL 5 on/off, how much does your CPU usage vary by?

I have a P4 3GHz (HT enabled), 1GB. I run Sonar at 11ms latency in ASIO mode.

I hate the Piano Roll in Sonar 4 but love it in FL Studio. Also the FL stepsequencer with the possiblity to "send to piano roll" is lovable.

Sonar 4 is perfect for audio recording, which is not the case in FL Studio IMO. Sonar 4 comes with the incredible freeze tool, so CPU/RAM problems are solved.

Does anybody else hate Sonar Piano Roll?

I find it a little unpredictable at times. It will do odd things like mute notes that you can clearly see drawn in. It can do strange things to your velocity curves that you've not asked it to do. It can reset a MIDI instrument's preset to a random "default" preset at the start of EVERY MIDI clip. It can be a general pain in the arse at times. So, yes I prefer the FLS piano roll in general.

All of those Sonar quirks usually have some explanation when you go fault finding -- but I hate having to spend time doing as it interupts the flow.

It's perhaps the worst thing about Sonar, although it has good midi capabilities. That's why i'm looking for another program, to take care of midi job. Somebody told me Project5 could be the solution for my problem. Does anyone tried P5 ?

I will make a new thread out of this.
