I'd recommend Dynamix for your purposes. It can act like a compressor, limiter or even a dynamic EQ. All in one for 109 Eur...

It's worth to check their site, because in the next few days we'll get somethin' spicey :)

Are we saying that Isotope came out with the first RTA spectrum analyzer (which Harbal is not) or just that Ozone was the first to display spectrum overlay ? One earlier than that was Cool Edit spectrum analyzer.

CurveEQ by Voxengo is a true WYSIWYG spectrum type EQ. Harbal optionally displays an averaged representation of the original curve, a curve of your cumulative changes and a reference curve. You can also display another view of the actual spline EQ which is more of a WYSIWYG representation but you can't view that and the curve with the accumulation of your changes at the same time. Also there is no view for real time spectrum - the spectrums are all averaged in some fashion.

There are all fine tools and learning devices and differing interfaces - I don't see any toys here.

Yes HarBal is very smart choice. And their support is simply outstanding

definitely ozone for that money.
i am looking to get isolated plugins that shines at what they do. I know Ozone is a good deal, but how does it's eq compare to the quality of harmonyeq, kjaerhus etc. The same goes for the compressor?
Yes HarBal is very smart choice.
harbal doesnt seem so attractive to me because its not a plug. I would like to be able to listen to the entire mastering fx chain at once.
If you can wait and splurge on an EQ, Hydratone is just awesome! But wait until Angeltone comes out, which is aimed at mastering.
Is Angeltone aimed at transparency? i am looking for colourful mastering. I had the idea that I would need 2 eqs. One for transparent problemsolving, and one for sound sweetening. Right now i am looking for the colourful one.

would voxengo HarmonyEq be a good choice for mastering, or should it be an eq with a more normal technique?

HI

I would look at the range of plug-ins by 'Wave Arts' - they are of a very high quality and include a loudness maximizer and a stereo field expander.

The loudness maximizer is as good as it gets outside of getting a Powercore and the Sony Inflator.

They do a nice eq and compressor that it much underated as well.

Porpoise.

i would go for the UAD-1 - it comes with superb
EQs, Compressors and so on
i just ordered it and waiting for delivery

The UAD-1 is so good, people recommend it before they even use it!!

Kidding.

T-Racks gives a ton of color. And if you use it right, it sounds balls. Check out: http://www.olavbasoski.nl/ - I couldn't believe it when he told me he uses T-Racks! Just if you use the presets, back off on the settings a little. They're pretty over-the-top.

If you had the dough, I'd say the UAD-1 is what you want. And Har-Bal is a great tool. But if you're gonna do mastering and don't even have a good set of plugins yet, you have a long road ahead of you. You'll also need some good monitors and room treatment.

Dr. Feelgood wrote::?: is there some hardware I should maybe go get instead?
Yes (though not instead). Two pieces of hardware I consider essential for mastering:

1. Very good monitors, in a good sounding room.

2. "Mastering Audio - the art and the science" by Bob Katz.

voxengo elephant is good definitely...the voxengo GlissEq is a good eq as it has a realtime spectrum analyzer that's really useful

I'd also look at the pspaudioware.com stuff, for example the mixpack and the stereopack (only $24 for the 2nd).

I wouldn't go with the ozone, because you won't learn as much with getting all those modules at once (tho it's worth downloading the manual which is a good mastering primer)....best to buy one piece at a time and learn what it does to the sound.

All voxengo & psp plugins have working demos available, I recommend trying them out to see which of them give you a sound you like.
