Currently, my favorite "filter" is a convolution processor, like Convo-Boy or SIR. You can definitely achive some drastic things with one of those. You can also use them for a subtle coloration of your signal, whatever you like. (Of course, most people don't think of these as "normal" filters, but they are indeed a specialized type of filter.)

As this is in the Effects forum I think we can rule out filters in an instrument. I'm kind of with ThunderDrums on this. I've used the Kjaerhus Auto Filter a couple of times just to play with the stereo field of a lead more than anything but I really don't get a few comments I've read lately about NorthPole being someone's most used effect. Even with an envelope follower I find that you can't do tto many useful or interesting things with filter effects.

Usually I just use them as extreme EQ.

Comb filters are a different story though :)
