I just got Traktor Studio 2.6, is a bit expensive (200 USD) but its GOOD. It has everything others has but more. 
I don't fancy NI much, but I must say, Traktor is indeed very good.

I have the traktor DJ version and its great but sadly no support for midi controllers so a bit irritating trying to control it with the PC keyboard.
Still a great program for little money tho, just need some hands-on control to do better mixes i think.

in reality, how much use are these plugs for live performance? I can't see how you can have multi outputs, i.e. to play one track and cue the next one up for decent beat mixing? I guess these are useful for putting pre-arranged mix CDs together but am I wrong on my first point?

If you can mix already I see no reason why these can't be used live once you have learned how to use them properly. Practice would be the key. I would never use them live as I'm not confident using as pc as the main source in a nightclub (stability, moisture, idiots throwing drinks about! )CypherOne wrote:in reality, how much use are these plugs for live performance? i could chat about djing options for days. it's such an interesting topic. it really all comes down to what sort of djing you are up to. people integrating with live musicians will need something different than people cueing up Jay-Z tracks.
some people might need a 10 output soundcard setup to feed individual mixes to their performers, other people might just need some numark cd decks.
Behringer(yep the bad guys 'round here) have a new djing console thing at an affordable price. it is fairly original in its affordability except the software seems to be a traktor immitation. Ms. Pinky the Max/MSP virtual records seem to be an affordable option and i think they are at the forefront of video scratching which DJ Shadow employs at shows now, im not entirely sure about this maybe someone can clarify for me.
this year electro-harmonix released a new looping machine with midi sync, and the virtual vinyl market is booming but in general i find a lack of new hardware looping tools on the market. i am amazed to come on kvr news every week and see a new looping plugin released(buffer capture stuff), plugs that i was begging for two years ago but now that its available im not jumping on software looping mainly cause i dont have a laptop. and if i did have a laptop i wouldnt trust it. muse research and neko labs are expanding possibilities in this regard. but those young dj software coders reading this please dont give up on making looping dj development for us because software will always be the most flexible as it provides a visual console for djs to work with.
my personal live setup includes things like groove samplers, my roland mc-09 looping machine, and combine that stuff with standard cd decks. every little mp3 player or discman you own is useful when djing.
if you were nuts you could even use two instances of winamp on a stereo output of a cheap laptop, and pan the two different versions left and right but that would be very difficult and your songs would have to be matched ahead of time. i think ANY dj software package would be better than that.

cypher - i wasn't talking about plugins but then i'm not sure that comment aimed at me!! I was talking about standalone DJ software and stuff, cos i got 2 soundcards so i can use one for headphone monitoring and one for main output.
Spacefox - at the minute i'm just playing with my evolution MK449-C controller keyboard. No crossfader as such, but 8 knobs and 9 sliders so i can hook up all the main controls like 3 band EQ on eachdeck, low/high filter knob, pitch and volume sliders etc. Its not perfect but its a HELL of a lot better than using a keyboard or mouse, and with practise it becomes pretty intuitive. Also can assign keys to trigger play/pause/cue/loping etc, although i haven't actually tried it yet.
