it took me a while to spot that  ... but I think it is an outstanding feature to be able to drag and drop a VST (or Rewire cliednt such as Reason) and then record directly to audio as you "play" it through your keybaord MIDI controller. Awesome!

I wonder if P5 will let you do this...? Anyone know?

Surely a simple app like TapeIt will do the same thing for people who use other sequencers. ;) I'd rather just record the automation and then render, mind you.

I've not heard of TapeIt... something else to go and look up! Thanks for the heads up, LM 8)

Dimension *is* the new sampler...

DS864 had dated in *their* opinion, certainly not mine. It is actually perfectly useful and has some nice sounds that ship with P5 V.1. I dont think a sampler can *age* as as such. I think sometimes they (CM) have to pick out something as a con or the review will look a bit one sided.

The only two negatives / cons were...

1. The box isn't as nice as P5v.1

2. DS864 has dated badly.

Cakewalk should be thrilled with the review. as a P5 owner I can tell that there is abosolutley nothing dated about it in my view. The comment about the box has nothing to do with the software anyway. :hihi: I don't think even CM take comments like that too seriously and probably don't expect their readers too either. :hihi:

This sort of thing happens when a package is so impressive. They have to put something in the cons section of a review, although with the P5v.2 review it was a bit odd. :hihi:

These specs for the DS864 are very useful in my opinion...how many sequencers ship with 2 samplers?

P5v.2 ships with the DS864 and the Dimension sampler! :o

DS864™ — Digital Sampler

Get pristine piano sounds, realistic strings, or virtually any sound you like using this performance oriented, multi-format sampler. DS864 is flexible and easy-to-use with ample sound sculpting abilities and pristine audio fidelity.

Support for Akai S5000/6000, Kurzweil, Sound Fonts 2, WAV, AIF and proprietary sample formats
8 layer / 64 voice polyphony

Supports key mapping and velocity zones

Sample-level editing and effects for creation of new sounds.

Two resonant filters with keyboard tracking which can operate in series or parallel

Four 6-stage envelope generators with multiple slopes

Eight audio outputs for flexible post sampler effects processing

Full parameter automation

Project5 ships with 500 MB of DS864 sampler banks from Q-Up Arts

See what I mean? Not bad for a second string sampler to the main event that Dimension is eh?

Maybe the cons aspect should be changed because they really have to come up with something pretty small to fill that section when reviewing a superb product like P5. 8) Again I really do not think CM expect their readers to take the comments made about the box and the DS864 sampler too seriously and know their readers can *read* between the lines.

DS864 or something close to that is the P5 sampler. And it is dated and imho it's probably better to go with sfz (or sfz+) for 'real' sounds. Though some still find it useful and some on the P5 forum actually push this to do amazing things.

Dimension is a more a layered rompler with mods, aerodynamics and some supercharging.

FWIW, Reason does  . But I suspect this will prove similar... I rarely use the NN-19, because NN-XT is much better. I suspect the same will go with P5, but it remains nice to have the option, and I like to see products evolve rather than change completely...

...speaking of which, is the Synchron32 still in P5 v2? That thing looked sweet...

True but I meant a sequencer that can record audio as well but I did not make myself clear :D

Anyway...ahem, Synchron 32, good question. I am pretty sure I heard Brandon Ryan mention it in the demo video but I could be wrong, it may not ship with V.2 I think it will though, I hope it does anyway.

It looks like Cakewalk have added the video demo to their main page and the P5 product page...

Just watched the video, it looks and sounds good, may end up getting it myself for christmas (bargain with educational discount). Best thing is I will still be able to use my present host with it, its energyXT and I can just use it as a vst inside, I can have my cake and eat it!

Did you see their review of Hartmann Neuron VS? It got a 3.

That comment was merely an observation of some people's attitude around here towards CM's reviews. To be honest, I don't put much faith overall in their reviews and just use it as a 'sneak peak' type of thing for getting some more info about the product. Generally speaking, Sound On Sound's reviews are far more informative and trustworthy, but by the time they review it, I will already have v2 in my possession (unless Edirol mess that part up).

Reason - NN-XT/NN19
Orion - Ultran/Sampler

I shall have to watch the video... from what I remember of the P5 v1 demo, this little pattern sequencer stood out as one of the bits I liked, but I didn;t noticed it mentioned in the P5 v2 web announcement. I hope it's there.

Does anyone know a UK price for P5 v2 (is it mentioned in the CM review?)

Post

The CM review states £199.

As people will want to load v1 tracks in v2, I would suggest that the inclusion of Synchron in v2 is a certainty. I don't use the plugin myself as the inclusion of the Step Seq view in the P-Seq module in v1.5 pretty much rendered it pointless...

yes it is still there :)

Thanks guys. £199 sounds like a very attractive price for this one...

I just bought my Project5 v1.5 at www.academicsuperstore.com for $129 (with free upgrade to version 2, obviously). I would suggest that any students take advantage of this deal while you can!
This is an amazing price for what seems like it will be a phenomenal soft studio / sequencer. I was thinking about Cubase SL3 or Live 4 before I happened upon this gem. I just hope it doesn't actually take 6 weeks to get my upgrade...
