Exactly.
Also :
Moby hit - minus- gospel sample = Richard Clayderman

Moby used to iron my granny's undies.

I do like Moby's Ambient (1993) album quite a bit and find myself going back and listening to it time and time again. It's simple, repetetive and has cheesy patches etc. But sometimes it's simplicity is what I'm in the mood for. It does tend to convey certain emotions in an interesting way, is more background music, but my mind then tends to think about other things overtop of it and make it's own movies, video's ideas or whatever, so it works nicely for that sort of thing.

There are a few song's on Moby's later albums that are good, but overall I defintely think he's WAY overrated.

I've listened to quite alot of it and I must say I find it to be hugely overated. :)

Yes, he's overated. I think that's because of "Play", which WAS a good album. It was so popular and got so much exposure that from then on, Moby could record the worst music he could come up with and still be destined to sell a lot and get exposure. What I don't get, though, is why he's the only one who gets this kind of success in electronic music. Play was good but there are better albums out there that get little exposure. How did people notice "Play" and never noticed other albums that are either just as good or better? It certainly isn't because of his image!

I think xoxos had it right, he is a brand of outsider suitable enough for Entertainment Tonight. One thing about Play, it had been out for at least a year before it was a hit. The ubiquity of the songs in the commercials gave him that boost. As long as it's on TV, it must be good, right?

hes a very nice guy tho,and also very into what he does
if you dont like it dont listen  easy enough eh?

I think we (musicians) want more from electronic music than your average listener. Moby sounds great to listeners, but it takes a little more to impress musicians. I think a lot of his stuff is good. Yeah, it's repetative, but he's got a knack for making stuff you're average person can pop in their cd player and groove to without having to concentrate on every little detail.

i find just about all popular music over rated, but i think this comes from being a musician / composer myself, as i think your opinions are also bias. what about this for a question? doers moby think HIS music is over rated? we often are very proud of a peice of music immediately after making it, then move on to the next thing we're doing... i doubt moby or anyone else making music which happens to become popular thinks as highly of thier music as the fans do.

edit:

whoa how did i miss the last post.
well, i agree, obviously :O

'I Feel So Real', after that it all went downhill.

i never bothered to pay attention to any of his music, but when i first heard porcelain playing in "The Beach" i thought it was an amazing and beautiful song that fit the movie perfectly.

other than that song, i can't say i care for any of his other work.

I like Moby, and think he's a cool guy. Do I think he's overated, hell yeah! :-o I mean, I think it's great that a talented geek with no hair still has a chance to 'make it big' amongst the Britney's and Ricky's at the time - a tremendous achievement for Moby indeed! :D But then his birthday in New York was on Sept. 11th 2001... So if that effected the production of '17', I wouldn't be surprised. And Moby goes out of his way to go against the expectations set forth by the pandering media and fans that fall into him. So I don't think I could ever say 'It's Moby's fault for the hype' ever?

He's a talented unapologetic cool nerd that got filthy rich after 10 years of underground obscurity almost.
And even with some Hillbilly Hip Hop Halfwit that says 'there's no such thing as bad press...' and then gives Moby 'bad press' in his song to only further promote Moby by having his hip-hop halfwit fans beat up Moby after a show, and Moby still comes out on top after it all...

Moby IS the higher power. :hail:

One thing I've noticed most long standing musicians have in common is that they are people of many visions. There's not a single artist that's lasted a long time that doesn't have minions of people who say "oh I loved that one, but that other one, bleh, crap, mediocrity, etc." If you like one of his songs but not others, then where do you think that musical ability went? Do you think he sold it to some guy on the street? The most likely explanation is he was trying to do something different. The thing that makes his music special has changed, and when that happens, people have trouble seeing it. It may seem "cheesier" or not as complex, or more commercial, but that's probably what he was going for. People expect to hear one thing but hear another, and are dissapointed.

If you don't like him at all for this reason or that, maybe his music just doesn't have what you're trying to find in a song?

In short:

I guess I was a bit hard on the guy. I mean, it's not like he's consciously trying to repeat himself all of the time. A least he is making the music he wants to make and if I don't like it, I don't have to listen... and all of that stuff, etc. etc.. And I don't deny that he's made some decent music in the past as well.
