Is a soundfont "geared towards hip hop" needed?

its always nice to have great hip hop samples..i have a lot to, but always grab as many as i can.
I used to think that hip hop required samples...but I have changed my tune lately..due to the fact that i can play 3 intruments, and have finally acquired a good DAW and MIDI keyboard...a lot of killer sounds are in my softsynth orchestral and horn plugins, and now I can write my own hooks instead of slicing them up and paying a royalty. I am not talking about the cheesy Usher keyboard beats, but I mean write parts and do whatever to them filterwise....I really like a lot of the def jux artists beats, and not all are sample based....some of the filtering ElP does to his samples is out of control.you can apply that to keyboard parts too.

Yes. I understood you wrong in the beginning. I was expecting a second "Pure Phatt" soundset with saw basses and other typical synth-hiphop stuff.
If you manage to make such a library you'd be definitely a hero. Not only on KVR, also on other forums.
If you want to publish a pack with samples from old records, make sure they are so rare nobody knows them anymore. And inform the person that hosts for you that there is a certain risk involved. If you don't do that you'll be surprised how your effort can turn into getting flamed and cursed for "stealing" stuff. I have made this mistake before, so MAKE SURE your keep that clear.
At the end of the day, I'm always up for good samples, so why not.

I've begun work on the library now.

So far on your to-do list:
* put hip-hop vinyl samples into a soundfont
* learn to program FM synths
* learn to create VST plugins
* learn to code C++
You got a lot on your plate, mate!

Ehh, drop the c++ and program synths for now. I decided that was too much to handle for the moment. But the key is to keep myself busy busy busy. Not to mention working on songs. Keep the soundfont and FM synthesis though, still on that task.
Actually learning FM synthesis and the soundfont go together. That is partly why i'm learning it, to make patches for the soundfont.

I too would be interested in what you got!! I'm always looking for new sources for sounds. You may not recognize them by the time I get through with it, but that's the fun isn't it? Anything I can use for drums or orchestral/synth hits would be great. If you do sample some riffs just label them so the person knows what he/she is getting. I can then decide if I want to make it commercial and pay fees. Although I've been known to chop a sample beyond recognition.

Hmm, synth hits. That thought didn't even occur to me. I'll try and make some of those as well. I made a sweep the other day, I MIGHT put it in with the soundfont. I'll show it to you.
Here you go, I'm still having some problems with this but I don't think it is a big obstacle. This is a sweep I made.

This sound in particular isn't exactly directed towards hip hop, but it could be used still. As I said earlier in the thread, I wish for this to be a bit open for other genres as well. It is how in all how you use something!

I need to ask you all, so I get this right. What types of sound would you be most interested in. Just place things from various categories. Example being bass sounds (low sub basses, mellow guitar like basses) Lead sounds (the infamous "gangsta whine" sound, some mellow lead with delay or growling leads), you get the point
. Help me help you!

This is mostly geared towards those who don't know how to make their own. The soundfont would have things for them to work with without having to spend months tryna learn, or dishing out 400 dollars for a sample disc of some sorts. For instance, a lot of people have trouble getting their own drum sounds out of a synth, which there will be samples of synth drums in this soundfont too.MotorMind wrote:What is wrong with collecting and/or making your own samples, be it for hiphop or otherwise? In my view that's at least half the fun ... and it makes for a fresh sound.

A big thing to remember is most people interested in hip hop like real sounding instruments. The drums sound best in a raw 8 bit form, but the synth sounds are and having been going to more realistic sounding instruments.
Most hip hop producers still sample most of the tracks, but some producers will shell out the cash to get real musicians playing real instruments. Either way the sounds of most of good hip hop are more organic sounding.
That new sage francis a healthy distrust has some nice beats on it. I would say at least 95% of the beats were done on a mpc sampler. They are crazy beats, but then again the bands put on a better show. get a guitarist, a bassist, a drummer, and a percussion section, and an emcee or two and you have quite the show.

Always remember that others may hate you but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself.

about once a week, someone posts here about making a nice huge bass, so I might include some sub/bass stuff.
