Visconti's website is an interesting read to anyone interested in production. He freely talks about how he did a lot of stuff, especially on Bowie's records. I was interested to find out that the lead melody sound on "Ashes to Ashes" wasn't a synth, as I'd always thought, but was simply a grand piano way mashed up in a flanger. I put a grand piano sample through a flanger effect and got something very similar within seconds.

I would have never figured that out. Reading this, I can now hear the piano basis, but the flange thing would have never occured to me..LBN wrote:I was interested to find out that the lead melody sound on "Ashes to Ashes" wasn't a synth, as I'd always thought, but was simply a grand piano way mashed up in a flanger.
That's a great track; one of my favorite Bowie tunes.

Same here. It makes me realize how much there is to still learn and explore with just the standard effects and more common sounds. At least we weren't the only ones. He gets asked that enough to put it in his FAQ section.Sickle666 wrote:I would have never figured that out. I've been running R5 stuff through Surface (xoxos) and E-Fex...I dont know why yet but I've like the results. most likely this has nothing to do with your post, yet it is driving sound at certain levels and changing timbre (sometimes drastically) in a nice way...esp E-Fex. just a thought.

It's called DSPFX, a product that is most likely dead already... although they appeared bundled with some app a long while ago.
They aren't that special, they weren't that special in the first place. One could replace them easily with better alternatives back in the day. And that was years ago.

Old they may be, but for your part you name no "better" alternative, regardless of age, nor do you toss one bone of advice suggesting a possible substitute.jmh wrote:It's called DSPFX, a product that is most likely dead already... although they appeared bundled with some app a long while ago.
Care to suggest what these alternatives might have been? I love history. They aren't that special, they weren't that special in the first place. One could replace them easily with better alternatives back in the day. And that was years ago.

That would be a taste issue then, me thinks. I didn't know it was obligatory to name 'better' alternatives in the past to somehow validate my opinion. It's almost as if you feel somehow insulted that someone else posted a differing opinion?
My comments weren't directed at you and your taste.
Let's put it this way then... DSPFX was a bundle. For the price, you might not have been able to purchase a 'better' equivalent for each and every plugin back then at the same price. For that - price vs. amount of plugins, DSPFX was a good deal.
My comment about them not being anything special doesn't equal "they're crap", just to clarify that.
As for alternatives in general... it won't take that much searching in here to see what particular plugins are highly regarded in each category.
But just to entertain you... TC offered a better sounding reverb back then - and when you listen to it now, it makes one wonder why it was consired so good back then.
To entertain you more, I'd have to do some serious brain digging to remember what was available and in use several years ago. But for some odd reason, my mind is more focused on what's out there nowadays, and I could suggest you some modern alternatives if you're honestly interested
Oh, one thing that popped into my mind. Quartz FX or what ever that bundle was called. Back then, its pitch shifter did the trick for me. Sounded better than anything else, at least in what I used it for - pitch shifting big stereo pad type sounds and sometimes drums. Did a lot of harmonizing with it, including some three or four note harmonies on 303 riffs (which I'm not that proud of anymore
)
Somehow I don't quite understand the tone / attitude... as I didn't mean to diss you or your opinion.

Not in the least. Many tastes makes for a good meal. It's almost as if you feel somehow insulted that someone else posted a differing opinion?
No tone here mate. The fog of forum communication. One is deprived of great deal of useful data when one's communication tools are reduced to keyboards and monitors.Somehow I don't quite understand the tone / attitude... as I didn't mean to diss you or your opinion.

Gotta dig out those Quartz FX bundles now. I think there was several plugins that had something in them I used to like. And it'll be a trip down the memory lane =)
