Its already been confirmed its x86. The development kit is already available and its widely speculated that the new Pentium D is what Apple wants - both for its built-in DRM and dual-core features.

chip architecture versus OS architecture - yup, different. You can't run BeOS programs for x86 in windows, for example. A lot of what makes a program work in a particular operating system is OS-specific function calls. That said, maybe we will see something similar to WINE for MacOSX on x86?
