No discussion of classic metal albums would be complete without bringing up "Rust in Peace". This was Mustaine's magnum opus: Killer fast hard 'n heavy riffs, searingly beautiful solos, and some pretty decent lyrics.
It's comparable to Metallica's "Master of Puppets" in terms of quality and being the last good album produced by that band.

A well-behaved signature.

Rust in Peace = sweet.
The riffs and drumming on that cd are incredible. "Holy Wars" is imho Megadeth's best song.

Great thread... but to open it up a bit (but not too far... hehe)... here's a few other metal albums that got me through my teen years...
Overkill - The Years of Decay
Testament - The Legacy
Testament - The New Order
Exodus - Impact is Imminent
Anthrax - Among the Living
Death Angel - Frolic Through the Park
Metal Church - Blessing in Disguise
Vio-lence - Oppressing the Masses
and then there's...
King Diamond - Conspiracy
Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry
Sanctuary - Into the Mirror Black
Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King
Queensryche - Rage for Order
and so so so many more. I have a huge box of VERY worn metal cassettes... keeps tempting me to get a good cassette deck to hook up to my mixer.

I'm an old bastard too.
If I had a dime for every fatty I smoked and beer I drank with friends around a blaze in the woods to Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth and Stormtroopers of Death cassettes I'd be rich.

i hav to say the first the first 5 Maiden are the first 5 Metallica records are the ultimate metal records ever.
but, if you guys are craving good new old skool metal, i dare you all to get a copy of Blessed Black Wings by High On Fire. I'm telling u people, i know metal and all i like is old skool metal, and this record is such an amazing achievement in evil, i can easily say this is probably the last classic metal record ever.

Actually my favorite Metallica is their last (before sucking that is).
And Justice For All is brilliant music, James Hetfield working really hard to overcome his limitations and strike out into new territory.
The production is over the top though (IMHO).
That kick drum sounds like 2 pieces of plywood slapping together.

The best Metallica's song: Master of Puppets. Best albums: Justice and Black lp. The last one is really well produced.
Testament's The Ritual is also excellent trash metal album. Guitar solos are inceredible.

Brainwashed... great tune... and a hilarious video. I listened to Handle with Care quite a bit back in the day.
