Maybe the Bechstein soundfont. I don't think that's spelled right.

What 'bout the 4front piano?? I recall that one is rather, ehm... interesting!

Post

I love the 4front piano but it's tuned perfectly.

The FL Keys has a detune knob that allows you to get a great, horrid sound, but I think it's native to FL.

PT, thanks for the Bechstein soundfont idea. I'm downloading now. I agree, there are too many perfect pianos out there, not enough pianos with character. I've been looking for something to play barrelhouse on (something along the lines of Faces "Ooh La La") for a long time. I've been using mda's piano and detuning, but it's not really close. Doesn't have any "clunk" to it.

Post

yeah, the 4front piano is nice, but doesn't sound very realistic as a solo instrument, IMHO. I'll search craigslist.com for a free broken piano and try my hand at sampling it.
maybe i'll pay some movers to get it up 4 flights of stairs, then push it out my window when I'm finished sampling it. heh,now THAT'S art baby!

Well, the Bechstein soundfont wasn't it, it's just poorly recorded. Sounds bad in a bad way.

the Rain piano is a pristine example of an upright piano sampleset. it does have some great character, but in no way is it broken. There are literally hundreds of softsynth and FX VST's out there that would never set well in a mix. Most of us love those VST's because of it. So why don't we have the same choices in samplesets? The rainPiano will set well in a mix, and will help you make a great nina simone cover. cool, but not 'bad' enough. how about some key noise, or loose hammers, or odd knocks, or unequal temperament. I see a small bit of that in most all the upright samplesets out there, but they're very tame. Vertikal is for ragtime. RainPiano does blues, bebop, and gospel. The Vintaudio Upright collection does ballads, contemporary christian, jazz, and blues. I'm over-generalizing, but the fact is they all sound like they're in pristine condition.
I'll say it again, PMI's IOWA is almost there.
I think they're is a market for 'bad' piano samples. warts and all. MDApiano,
4front piano, and all the cheesy free soundfonts in the world isn't enough. I'm talking to you, Sampletekk and PMI. let's talk about it. I know you guys are out there.

Yeah, I deleted it almost immediately, but I don't know exactly what you are looking for and it is out of tune as you asked for and some people love it.

Let us know what you settle on if you find it.

Hey, PT. I like the bechstein SF because it sounds like some old Ensoniq Mirage disk. fizzy and ringy. pretty close to the piano on Magnetic Fields track '1000 Fireflies'.
but, because of that 12-bitness, it doesn't hold it's own as a solo instrument.
no pedal U\D, and not much in the way of dynamics. but yes, PT, like the bechstein, but higher fidelity, close-mic'd and ambient multisamples with pedal up\down,the occasional junky key clatter, pedal noise, and five years in a hot, humid storage space. maybe even an entire collection of junky pianos to choose from! I'm just wishing out loud, but considering PMI made something like the 'prepared piano collection' [used on Aphex Twin's DRUQS, i believe]--someone might consider doing it. but would anybody PAY for it?
i truly think so. would you?

There was a piano soundfont I found somewhere, think it was called "real piano"... It sounded almost exactly like the slightly-out-of-tune upright I have collecting dust upstairs... Unfortunately, I have no idea what the link was (maybe it's on sf2midi).

Post

thanks, but I couldn't find that piano at sf2midi, ztrauq. but they have a soundfont called
MIS Piano mf LT.sf2 that seems to be a cutdown version of PMI's IOWA piano.
it's pretty useful, i guess. still looking, though.
