I thought of doing something with alternating 3/4 7/4 5/4 11/4 etc. and calling it "let me see you dance to this!"
But I guess I'm too lazy to bother with such a mess :hihi:

I play in a funk band that is considered by the crowds here to be one of the premiere dance-to groups in the area. We play a few tunes in 5/4. We have one that is part in 5/4, part in 4/4, and part with half the band in 5/4 and half in 4/4. Despite the confusion for me as a musician, no one seems to have trouble dancing to it. In fact, it was so made for dancing that it was called Sticky Bunz.

Honestly the next month will bring many days poolside...as it wouldn't be cool to bring my gi-tar down to the pool I do bring the laptop...I was thinking my idea of a dance song would probably be kinda disco...but then I thought their are many forms of dance...so here's the deal...I'm gonna have some fun, if something comes of it I'll throw it in...but not really for the sake of competing...hell I never wrote a dance song....I just wanna join in the fun too...:D

Dance Music! Isn't that an oxymoron?

Post

I need to rant a bit

I am so annoyed at the theme this month. I detest dance music. I have no clue how to dance and no desire to do so. So I think this month will be my first month in almost three years where I refrain from entering due to lack of interest or inspiration. I will better serve myself by practicing guitar.

So Adieu,
Gordon

I thought that dance music is the complete opposite of an oxymoron?

OK I am just extremely angry for selfish reasons because this theme is outside of my musical interests. The music I love and consider to be art is anything but danceable. And as I have already mentioned: I hate dancing. I don't mind watching others dance - my son is a terrific Breakdancer, but the music he dances to. Feh + phooey!

Sorry if I offend anyone.

Hey Gordon, the theme isn't 'dance music', it's 'music to dance to'. I wouldn't let your preconceptions about dance music stop you entering. It's a pretty wide theme. Isn't there some archaic old dance style you'd have some fun experimenting with? Try the Charleston. ;)

Many styles of jaath are dance music, if you want to stay close to home.

Thanks Barnadine,

I should not have replied so soon. I am not seeing the big picture. I guess I could get into some bouncy rhythms and assume they are danceable though this seems stupidly pointless to me. To be honest I have absolutely no clue what is danceable. I have always avoided dancing.

See ya,
Gordon

hey beardedone! i was thinking you'd be delighting us with more of your intoxicating rhythms. in fact my own entry this month will take its rhythmic lead from west africa, in i believe 5/4 time, who knows? but that's the kind of 'dance music' i like. anyway when trying to concoct a beat i seriously thought of researching your stuff - if it's fluid, it's dance music.

Beardedone:

Remember that, in a very literal sense, ballets are dance music, and the "Rite of Spring" is a ballet.

And don't forget Zappa's Ballet: "Sinister Footwear" (of which there are bits on the "Them or Us" and "You are what you is" albums).

I am already working on my entry, which will owe much more to Balinese ketjak than Club music.

I am sure your creativity will prevail.

Swing was dance. I mean, even before the lame revival in the late 90's. ;) The origins of jazz was the pop music of its day.

Brubeck's "Take Five" was very much waltzy! Who knew it would end up such a smash hit?

If you don't like a theme, subvert it. Twist it to your own ends.

Anyway, I think you can find some foothold, Gordon: you've risen to the challenge many times in the past and achieve amazing results by stretching out of your idiom.

Not to mention fun dances like the Tarantella, The Bouree and the Jig (There is even a 'slip-jig' in 9/8 time).

:)

I've just submitted a little bit of a ditty I whipped up this arvo.

I don't know much about dance, but some music does make your insides jig around a bit.
