@kmonkey
Thx for the info with the latency.
What do you mean with AA-Reverb ?

@Space Boy and Sickle
Hmmm ... is it really so good ? Finally with the W2 I've found the for me best sounding native reverb, and I just can't imagine that this Convo Boy will beat it. But I will test it ...

There is no technical reason why the sound of W2 should be better than Convo Boy (Quality almost completely depends upon the quality of the IR). See link below.

Besides this, Computer Music magazine recently voted Elevayta Convo Boy as certainly one to compare with the rest. It is up there with the best.

Given the difference in price. I would suggest it worth your while to give Convo Boy a try.

Note: There are two fully functioning versions of Convo Boy. A donationware (Lite) version and a product version. Naturally, the product version has more features than the donationware version (including lower latency).

AA-Reverb = ArtsAcoustic Reverb.

I agree with kmonkey - you definitly should check this out, or at least read the reviews... :)

Oh sorry, answered at your place...

I've just heard the demos of the Arts Acoustic reverb, but after that I would say, the W2 sounds much better.

And the reviews of the Elevayta Convo Boy are saying it plays in one liga with waves, prosonic etc. From this pieces I only know the IR-1, which I never found particularly good (not better than other, much cheaper reverbs).

But after your praise for the Arts Acoustic and the Convo Boy, I will nevertheless try them out. The last days I had no time for that, but next week, I think I will do a thorough test.

Btw ... had you guys tested the W2 yet ?

Post

Yes, I gave it a brief shot. As kmonkey already said, the convolution engine is really great, but I didn't like the algorithmic part that much. Here, the AAR is much more flexible and better sounding. As I don't use convolution reverbs often, W2 was no choice for me.

You should not completly judge a reverb's quality only by listening to the audiodemos provided by the manufacturer. You'd better download the demoversion and play around with it (best way to do it, is to test it in a real mix situation), so you can see if it fits your needs. :)

I hear ya - I'm sure you're right. The thing is, a convo reverb that includes those nice IR's feels a lot more like a complete package. I don't want to have to go searching through oodles of free IR's to find one that is passable. I also do not want to try and record my own. I know there are some expensive CD's of pro IR's out there.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I'd consider the Wizoo Verb and maybe the Waves IR1 before ConvoBoy or Pristine space because they do come with professionally recorded, great sounding IRs. IR1 is around $500-600 street price I believe, but its real strength is the huge library of IRs for it. Wizoo Verb has less IRs and a smaller price tag. (haven't compared any of these directly)

Anyway, I think if you included some great IRs with ConvoBoy, you would probably not only sell more of them, but you could also charge more. Seriously, maybe consider some sort of partnership with a seller of quality IR's - and sell Convoboy for $50 or so. You keep half and the IR partner gets half. Everybody wins.

Agreed. And the ones shipped with Wizooverb are very nice.

To top it off, it has a very nice sounding algorithmic reverb integrated with the convo verb.

Mind you, I'm not dissing Convoboy at all. It's a great sounding product when used with good sounding impulses. With Wizoo, you don't have to go find them.

Sorry, for not answering so long ... I had a lot to do.

I've tested now the Elevayta Convo Boy and I must say it sounds really good. Better than the IR1 in my opinion.

I've just compared the W2, IR1 and the Convoy Boy and they all sound different on the impulse responses. The W2 and the Convo Boy are relative close together but the IR1 is sounding totally different (and worst in my opinion).
I'll see which reverb I'll use in future (maybe both), but for the price of zero €, the Convo Boy is really a good deal. :D

CPU Usage shown in FL ranges between 2 and 15%, however Task Manager shows FL 'idling' at 53% with one instance of Wizooverb acting on one instance (playing a single note 4 steps long) of the 'Plucked' synth. When playing, audio stutters and *slows down* drastically and CPU usage in Task Manager jumps to 63-70%.

Are you sure you are using the 'High' CPU load option on the Setup page in Wizooverb?

I have no idea what a denormal problem is.

that would be your problem most likely. Alot of vst's have much higher cpu in fruity loops than they do in others. The asio for all might have something to do with it too...but i can't confirm that as I don't use it...my asio drivers are native to my steinberg audio card and Nuendo. I didn't notice a problem with the wizooverb demo though. Wish I could justify another vst purchase so I could buy it actually. :)

You'd think so wouldn't you but Wizzoo claim that it has some form of optimisation process that "will make your imported impulse responses sound much better than in any other conventional response reverb".

http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1668.html

It would be interesting to see how this claim stands up and maybe they should clarify how that is done (some sort of interpolation perhaps?)

- maybe I'll try the demo but I held back because I thought it was dongled or PACED or similar - is that not correct? Will the demo allow you to import IR's? It does look very good - I like the idea of combining the best of Convolution and Modelling technologies.

Not dongled and you can import IRs in the demo. Sounds great too!

Might be a bit of a CPU hog, but W2 sounds damn fine...

And I truly appreciate it's interface. (I get way lost with complex interfaces :( ).

It pretty much covers all the bases as far as reverb goes. Very realistic spaces, to unnatural FX...

And did I mention that it sounds damn fine?
