Of course what makes it even more confusing is that originally it was labeled Jungle. That term is probably still in use or used to describe some other minutely differentiated style of D&B . . . but then of course there was a time when all electronic dance was just labeled Techno. Now you'll have huge arguments over the definition of Techno.
Yea today DnB tends to be thrown at the darker & Harder stuff while more jazzy ambient stuff goes under Jungle
Yeah, then people add the word 'step' to everything to make new genres: tech step, 2 step, jazz step, etc step... People do the same thing with the word 'core' too: hardcore, breakcore, darkcore, etc-core...

Make sure and check out the rest of the "How much is inside?" adventures...hell just check his whole site, he's a mad genius.
One of my personal favorites is what he did to the TGI Fridays menu...

Oh shit, don't even get me started on people tagging "-core" on the end of stuff... :x

you forgot "darkstep"
There are about 20 "cores" that fit under emo. NONE of it deserves the names either :hihi:

How about "footstep", "doorstep", "Stairstep", "applecore" :hihi:

Q: Mr. Wise Old Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the chewy center of a Tootsie Roll Pop?

A: Let's see. One... t-whoooo... thuh-reee... *BITE* Three.

P.S.: The best genre is stepcore.

Imagine going into a record store where there were no genres and just looking around to see what looked interesting... I have a feeling record sales would plummet due to frustration pretty quickly.

The existing sets of broad genres work pretty well so long as you don't mind that many bands really overlap genres. Rock and pop for instance share a lot of the same space. I'm not saying that Tool and Ashley Simpson share the same genre, but stuff like the Beatles is definately a bit of both.

When you get into bands like Nine Inch Nails things get confusing. I've heard them refered to as rock, pop, industrial, nu metal... There's a bit of all of those in there. I'd say Nine Inch Nails is one of a large collection of bands that simply can't exist in just one genre.

Oh, and don't get me started on "-bient."

Lawnmower, I run into this when looking for:

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (unique bluegrass-jazz-whatnot; found in Rock, Pop, Country, Jazz)

Vangelis (found in Rock, Jazz, Newage, Classical)

... and others equally hard to categorize.

I think the worst "core" I ever heard of was "Gaycore". It was a post on craigslist, guy looking for other gay musicians to start a "Gaycore" band. :dog:

I thought of starting a "Streightcore", "Lesbocore" "Bicore", and "Transgendercore", band after that. Or maybe a "sexualpreferencecore" band

having an 5 GB MP3 player, extremely descriptive styles just makes putting songs into the player more cumbersome when using database services. for example, the last white stripes album came up as lo-fi/grunge while nirvana came up as general alternative. if i left the genres alone, the only thing i would have had in the lo-fi/grunge category would have been the white stripes. i find that i have to go through and change genres for most everything.
