We released a couple of cover versions. Our record company took care of the details, but I know the basics.

You basically don't need permission, you just have to pay whoever owns the publishing for the song 7.5 cents per copy you PRESS (not sell) There is a minimum of 500 copies also no matter if you press only 1. (35.00)

The Harry Fox Agency has a huge database that should find out the publishing info for you. Check their website.

It matters not in what style you cover the tune, the original writer, or whoever they may have sold their rights to, is the party you need to compensate.

you're being shafted. I get 17% as a performer and 8.5% as the writer. Works out at around £2 per CD. Then there is PPL and PRS for airplay.

Surely it's not even possible to cover a cover. Being a cover, that implies there is an original, so all you're doing is a cover of the original. The fact that Marilyn Manson has also done a cover isn't relevant. Just because it might sound like Manson's version, doesn't mean you'd have to get his permission.

Just out of interest - "Tainted Love" is a Northern Soul tune from the late 1960s sung by... er, cant remember
Gloria Jones (who incidentally was Marc Bolan's missus and mother of his son.

You are talking to me?

The 7.5 cents is what we PAY per copy because we covered a Thin Lizzy song. We MAKE about $3 per copy including publishing in Japan and slightly less in Europe, and South America. Plus the public performance money from ASCAP.

just curious...what Thin Lizzy song? (I'm a big Gary Moore fan)...;)
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

"Hollywood" It's not from the Gary Moore period. Snowy White and Scott Gorham played on it.

It's not actually one of my favorite Lizzy tunes, but it fits the style of my band better than most of their other stuff.

I did a cover of "Waiting For an Alibi" for one of the KVR contests. Check it out if you like.
