You don´t like it don´t use it, that´s what i do with Live e.g..
I don´t think SX4 will be released that soon, I don´t miss it either.

After the upgrade Spectrasonics pulled off from Stylus to RMX, it feels to me like the rest are just giving updates new titles and charging us for it!
SX4...or what SX2 should have been in the first place? Or am I putting them down too much?

Well, not only SX4 probably being what SX2 should've been... VST 5 being what SX3 should be as well (at least partially). Which is really sad. Steinberg seems to be pretty great in backwards development.

as the number of features increase in ableton then i'm sure they'll be some bugs to follow. the sheer number of features within cubase must mean its hard to control the bugs ?headquest wrote: Not a chance - Ableton Live's top features are its stability (essential for confident live use) and that it encourages creativity through ease of use

I always get confused when people talk about all these bugs in SX. I've been using Steinberg hosts since VST3 (now with SX3), and have never really encountered anything that was show stopping that kept me from completing a project. Sure, it has some rough edges, just like literally every other peice of software has, so why always the harsh comments towards Steinberg? Just cause it doesn't work and look like Logic Audio doesn't mean its a "bug".
Either way, I'm just looking foward to the 3.1 update coming soon.

Your sentiment is fair enough, but actually I am a Cubase SX1 registered user. In my job as a teacher I find that nearly all the schools in my (UK) town have Cubase SX installed in their music departments (usually because it's all the music teachers have heard of, rather than because they have made an informed choice!stag wrote:This is about SX.

So I can't really avoid using Cubase, much as I wold personally prefer not to these days.
Yes - of course there are bugs in Live, as there are in all software programs. The issue is not whether bugs occur - that is a given!detfella wrote:as the number of features increase in ableton then i'm sure they'll be some bugs to follow. the sheer number of features within cubase must mean its hard to control the bugs ?
The issue IS how the company deals with the problem of the bugs that occur. Do they, for example, undertake thorough public beta testing before launching the product? Do they respond courteously to bug reports and bring out bug-fix updates regularly (say every month or two)?
This also spills over to feature requests - how does the company respond to user requests? Does each update show they are listening to their customers, and does each update actually IMPROVE the program?
In these areas I personally believe that Ableton are exemplary, and that Steinberg simply are not

it's hip and trendy to constantly bash cubase
i've been using it for years, and just recently upgraded to SX3, and my mate and I do projects every week....nothing huge but we always have at least a half-dozen audio tracks, with standard dynamics and eq plugs on them, and a handful of midi tracks as well, with always one or two large sample-based instruments responding. For a long time we were re-wiring Reason into our projects (long story) but have thankfully stepped away from that finally.
Anyway, no we aren't doing some uber 64+ track monster project, but I bet we are putting a lot more of cubase's features to the test, every damn week, than a lot of the people who bash cubase...
anyway, in years of doing this, we are aware of some small issues that can be avoided, however we've never ever hit a showstopper or been unable to do what we are after - ever - when working in cubase. i can't imagine what some of these people must be trying to do when they say cubase is so bad, so buggy, so unusuable...

SX3 is actually fairly stable on my machine, but coming from Logic I just can't understand how they don't implement certain functionalities (such as a user defineable mixer) or (worse) leave them out even if they existed in previous versions (such as audio to MIDI, which is freaking essential in case you plan to get a trigger track from real multitracked drums). And of course there's tons more.

we must have different ideas what that meansSascha Franck wrote:(such as a user defineable mixer)
because i'm able to define piles of stuff about the SX mixer, and save it as a mixer layout
user-definable transport panel too, ya know

You can not reorder channels in the mixer without reordering them in your project window as well.Muff Wiggler wrote: because i'm able to define piles of stuff about the SX mixer, and save it as a mixer layout
For me, this has got to be one of the worst things.
Also, it's impossible to have an overview of all sends and plugins used at a glance.
And the mixer doesn't follow your arrange selection when dealing with VSTis. It'll take you to their MIDI channel (which usually is completely useless when dealing with VSTis) rather than to their audio channel.
As said, I'm coming from Logic, but these are essential things for me.

yeah i'd agree with you about those mixer functionality.....never been a big deal to me though, i like that the mixer and the project window keep tracks in the same order - when i group them i want them grouped the same in both places
but yeah i guess if you are used to having this flexibility in your workflow, i can see how it would be annoying
maybe you can convince Bill Gates to buy Emagic?
