The first harddrive should be /dev/hda. A SCSI-drive would be /dev/sda.

Yeah, those idiots! Like you "mere mortals" would try something stupid, or hose the OS or anything like that. Like someone is going to be changing OS-critical files or something! I suppose just because I'm competent doesn't mean there aren't plenty of incompetent people working here who might have the urge to make random mods to their boot.ini file without checking the facts first.
The scary part is that she didn't even need admin rights to modify the boot.ini file!

Yes, I've been to bootdisk.com. Problem is they have a billion different bootdisks, and I'm having trouble finding just the right one which will let me do what I need.

can you not copy the boot ini from another pc the same in your compony?
well any other pc booting the same OS to the same drive letter???

The problem has been fixed. A big thank-you to everyone who responded. This is what makes KVR such a special place... knowing that there are so many people able and willing to assist, even with non-music related issues. This is why KVR is the only online community which I am proud to call home.
Knoppix is very cool, and I'm glad to have discovered it. I was able to access the drive and edit the boot.ini file. Unforunately, I couldn't save the edited file because the NTFS drive was mounted read-only. I tried unmounting it and adding my own r/w mount point, but it still wouldn't allow me to save the file.
Eventually I gave up and went with the brute force method. In the end, I had to pull the drive out, drive a few blocks to another building where I had a machine with administrative rights, scrounge around for an extra jumper to change the scsi id, and then I was able to mount the drive and fix the file.
Not exactly how I expected to spend my day when I woke up this morning, but hey, at least its fixed again.

It should have worked. That's the approach I generally use for getting at files Windows won't let me get access to. Maybe you needed to set it to read/write access manually for some reason (rightclick/properties I think) - unles it's down to your admins or something.deastman wrote:The problem has been fixed.

Glad you finally got it sorted. I wonder if the kernel compiled for that bootdisk had a restricted or older set of SCSI drivers. Maybe thats why you couldn't get it to mount. Hadnt realised you were using a SCSI boot disk.
As for not being able to write NTFS, I think the 'normal' compiled NTFS support is read-only because writing is still considered unstable. I had thought the boot disk I pointed you at included a kernel module with NTFS write support. Sorry if I was wrong.
