FL's mixer does a pretty good job of recording audio; although you need something else for wave editing.dougsyo wrote:I don't know that I'd buy the FLStudio XXL (come to think of it, I didn't).
I'd suggest Fruityloops edition ($99 last I knew) if you're not doing audio (ASIO recording in the host)
I really like FL, but I've realized lately that it's got some pretty bizarre limitations, and I guess I'm surprised that I still find it useful. It's not so good for recording and managing audio tracks, as you point out. It's also not terribly good at MIDI. It actually gets into "horrible" territory, if you're dealing with several outboard synths, multiple controllers, or if you need any kind of SYSEX support.
FL has a whole lot of things it gets right, but when I look at its limitations, I really find myself unable to explain why I like it so much. It's a great VSTi host, with a great mixer, and a lot of really useful features bundled with it -- it's a great value.
But for $150, I'd also have to look at Sonar, Orion, Podium, and whatever you get, you might consider adding EnergyXT to it.

May be a little irrelevant, but in the video demo for the TC PowerCore's MD3 Stereo Mastering- a $1000 plug + the price of a DSP card--I believe that the sequencer they are using is the $50 energyXT.

If you were using it as a plugin, then it is the host of the plugin's driver capabilities that count...Thoth93 wrote:Doesn't the basic FL version not support ASIO? To use as a plugin or to get the piano roll, you have to get the middle version. ASIO recording is limited to the high-end version.Thoth93 wrote:Doesn't the basic FL version not support ASIO? Have you checked out ORION? You might find it the best of all worlds. Its pattern-based like Fruity but the included instruments and effects are of the highest quality.
If you have and rejected it, I would advise you not to dismiss anything based on the fact that its initally difficult to get used to, as you seem tempted to do with eXT, unless you have something you need to get done by next week. If it takes you a month to get to grips with it, that should be seen as time well spent if the app meets all your needs. Certainly much better than workign with somethign that was easy to get into that ultimately falls short of your expectations 6 months down the line.

Hah! What a great post! I always have to chuckle to myself when I read posts like, "I tried SX for a few hours, but I couldn't get anything to work! Therefore SX sucks!"BONES wrote: If you have and rejected it, I would advise you not to dismiss anything based on the fact that its initally difficult to get used to, as you seem tempted to do with eXT, unless you have something you need to get done by next week. I remember back to my VST 5 days. I hated it at first (seemed waayy too complicated). But my GF bought it for my birthday, and I didn't want to insult her by throwing in the towel. I promised myself 2 weeks of pure Cubase immersion (reading, tinkering, reading, 20 beers, more tinkering, pulling out my hair). Somewhere in that time-frame, things even started to make sense to me!
Software costs more than just a monetary investment. It takes a lot of time to learn and become familiar with. I know people who have been using PhotoShop for years, but still say they are 'learning' how to use it.

personally I find FL incredibly hard to grasp but I agree about Tracktion - but if a sequencer is initially not as easy to grasp as another one it doesn't mean neccessarily it is harder to use once you've become familiar with it - the opposite might be the case!

FL Studio is not a tracker, FL Studio is not (only) a step sequencer (it comes with a true pianoroll, the best one available imo, FL Studio is a complete, awsomely featured integrated studio package. Plus, FL Studio is easy to use, really.
i love EnergyXT too, but i'd never use it as my main sequencer. to me, it's more the icing on the cake.
