Well I guess that what happens when a Tele player tries to create a Metal clip. :?

I don't know much about high gain tones, all I know is that I can get every tone I ever wanted from the AXE-FX.

Maybe if one of you metal players will get his hands on the AXE-FX we can see some clips that will please the metal heads.

To me this clip is as high gain as I will ever go.

For my ears, without offense, it's plastic !

It apperas nearly without cab emulation ..

Better for Carlton.

One more heavy clip, I don't know anything about:

The sound on Craig Sharmat's LCclone is very convincing.

I've heard some more clips from Craig that do confirm me of the rich tone for jazz/blues and rock.

Agreed. Though the Carlton clip wasn't really good. It sounds like a mediocre amp.

Better! I still didn't hear the jaw dropping tones that such a system should be able to deliver while carrying that price tag. And this is no matter which category of tone was presented.

I notice two criticisms- first that the heavy stuff lacks bite and second that it's hard to get pinch harmonics with guitar amp sims making them uninspiring.

I'm working on all that stuff, so can I have an opinion on how it's coming?

This is my newest, 'FireAmp', except it's not really a high-gain metal amp, so I'm cascading it- two instances. (still doesn't kill too much CPU). I feel it could have more low-end swing, but people keep saying they have to cut lows on sims... with this you certainly don't. Enough bite?

This one's actually already out now. It's called LeadAmp and this is one instance turned down until it's clean. I'm wondering if my crappy pinch harmonics are seeming like the kind that jump out, or the amp sim kind that are dead? For what it's worth, all these have no latency at all, so if the sound is right too, it should be possible to track through them.

How's this coming? I can tell it's very different, I'm just trying to get a sense for whether it's setting anybody's world on fire yet :)

Plugins don't hum by themselves- I'm tracking down some kind of a ground loop problem, 'scuse the buzz. Does it sound like amp buzz, anyway? ;)

Hi Chris,

my suggestions are: Stay with sounds you're familiar with. And develop some healthy perfectionism. :)

and you would know how?

*g* I'm lucky I didn't get 'keep your day job'. Mind you, this IS my day job :D :D :D

Nice burn tho!

Seriously, though, I HAVE had great difficulty in getting any sim or convolution model to have the kind of upfrontness and physical aggression I get when I take my guitar, plug it into my hotrodded Epi Valve Junior, run into a cab with a Weber Blue Dog 12", miked with a SM57 dead center, run into an API 3124+ preamp and into my franken-ADC.

What happens- and it happens with all the plugin sims I've heard- is that the plugin is thin, weedy, and has pretty much the exact tone color of the desired amp without any guts or solidity. In a mix with drums, the drums kick and the amp plugin just sits there filling up lots of space. It doesn't have the ability to cut through anything.

Also, when you see comparisons between real and plugin, typically the wave for the real amp and miked speaker looks like a brick (for high-gain sounds). You don't see squared edges on the waveform but at equal volume the plugin looks like an uncompressed wave, with much higher peak energy, and the real thing looks like a brick with very little extra peak energy, still without obvious clipping at the extremes of the wave... I have managed to nail this aspect, which doesn't seem very common among plugins.

What I don't have sitting in my studio room is- a BIG amp, like a Diezel or Mesa or Krank or 5150.

So- since I'm not entirely familiar with metalhead amps (but like their sound when they're real), and have enough perfectionism to not quit but keep going to produce still another sim this time built for metal from the getgo- how SPECIFICALLY is the first demo failing to do the metal-amp thing? The first thing that comes to mind is that it needs a lot more bass chug, which should be doable. I'm also tempted to open up the top end still more, but at the same time chop it off in the gain stages more aggressively- more top but sharper rolloff.

I'm quite serious- even if my style of amp-simming never comes remotely close to pleasing your own tastes, your feedback will still help develop better ones that other people can enjoy. And again, this IS my day-job and I ain't running off in tears. Have you got specific criticisms other than 'sux'? I tell you man, you've got to give me better directions than that. I already tried to remove the sux, but it keeps coming back in. See here

20 x = x + 1
30 guitar = more + distorted
40 sux

SEE?? There it is again, dammit! :D

Can it do this?

forget the amp sims. KEEP playing guitar! Your playing is great.

Don't ask me, I just play here.

You're putting me on O_O

I have a high-gain sound with a metal top-end but it's kicking my ass in completely when I try to get cabinet umph, which is the whole point of the exercise. Did I say minutes? Would you believe hours? Hopefully not days. Some of what's happening here should NOT be happening, so after I make a 2 AM dinner I'm going to keep bashing away at it.

Right now I could give you a Mesa-y scrunch scrunch chug, but completely without any lows :D oh god kill me now, talk about worst of both worlds...
