The Waves EMI tape is on sale this month $57.00 online resellers, cheaper than Softube's.Compyfox wrote:
I personally prefer the UAD AMPEX over the Waves one (the latter is just too tame - sounds strange even, can't explain why). The Waves Studer J37 (Abbey Road) is IMO a really great plugin, but sadly way overpriced though (due to the... er... name) - it would be such a great complementary add-on to VTM... maybe some day, if I have too much money to burn.
Slate's VTM just fits everywhere IMO. Unlike certain creations from certain "indie" devs. With the exception of VoS Ferric TDS (the dynamics feature works for so much more) and and certain super-finetuned U-HE SATIN presets (albeit way more subtle - still a great plugin that I consider "sandbox-type", in a good way!).
Welcome to my world... look out, the "block of defense" is probably already on their way to get you...

Yeah, unlike Slate Waves have huge discounts all the time - and unlike Slate they don't require a dongle. Imo Slate users are amongst the most forbearing and indolent persons imagineable, so I find it always weird to see them complaining about price, copy protection, marketing or what not of any other brand.

Via JRR Shop or Waves Central? Because the lowest I've found was 69USD.Pingafuego wrote:The Waves EMI tape is on sale this month $57.00 online resellers, cheaper than Softube's.
Still, that's a whooping 77% price drop over the 299USD MSRP. The "Abbey Road Collection" even goes for 299USD compared to 1299USD. And every time I see sales by various companies, at these low values, in regular intervals... I ask myself "why sell it at such a high price at the first place?! What's the 'actual value' in this case?!".
I might pick it (Waves J37) up, I might not. Still shuffling my Summer budget for something else (hardware related actually)
Er... Slate Digital does have sales. Pretty frequent as well - though not at every occasion like Waves and Plugin Alliance. Also, Waves can use either C/R or an USB key for license storage (though I'm so not digging their "Cloud" engine - at least it's not user-rights-cutting like NI Access). I did the latter, since I prefer USB key solutions due to their ease of use.jens wrote:Yeah, unlike Slate Waves have huge discounts all the time - and unlike Slate they don't require a dongle.
Right...jens wrote:Imo Slate users are amongst the most forbearing and indolent persons imagineable, so I find it always weird to see them complaining about price, copy protection, marketing or what not of any other brand.
One acronym for Waves: "WUP" - and one word for Softube: "Gobbler" (still iLok regardless)...
But let's not drift into that topic (copy protection) again... we're only at what... page 11?

JS Bach was blind.
Maybe we should ask him?
Better still, ask Beethoven cos he's deaf.
Actually I think I'll shoot myself and see if I can hear the difference then.
Saturday morning inanity over. I'll behave now

The one you are willing to pay for it...
If you're not after it's - excellent - delay and mod fx functions, I'd say don't...

otherwise imo Saphira is much better... which I think Softube Tape can't hold a candle to - and it's the same with TB Reelbus. With most of the dedicated console and tape-emus - and alas, right now I think Softube Tap belongs in that category (I really wanted to like it, low CPU&latency and all) - for me it's that they either are so subtle that I can't really tell what they are doing or they are often rather destroying than improving whatever is going through them.
TB Reelbus is amongst the rare exceptions for me here.
Otherwise personally I clearly prefer generic tools such as SDRR, Saphira, VSM-3 and Destructor, where you can relatively exactly dial in the response you want while leaving out all those artifacts that you find undesirable.
Sorry to be the party-pooper here...

But still - wouldn't that undermine the worth of a tool in question? Just... asking.jens wrote:Compyfox wrote: I ask myself "why sell it at such a high price at the first place?! What's the 'actual value' in this case?!".

In fact, those are the features I actually do not like. But different applications, different opinions.jens wrote:If you're not after it's - excellent - delay and mod fx functions, I'd say don't...
No need to be sorry. We're at a time where we can cherry pick what we might need for our workflow/setup. In fact, we're swamped with it. So each person has different opinions and usage for tool xyz.jens wrote:Otherwise personally I clearly prefer generic tools such as SDRR, Saphira, VSM-3 and Destructor, where you can relatively exactly dial in the response you want while leaving out all those artifacts that you find undesirable.

You're not forced to buy it, but it's not bad to at least take a closer, critical look either.

I try to remind myself that there are much worse things I could be spending my money on.

Anyone else notice in Studio One MixFX slot Softube Tape is using roughly 100% on the CPU Usage meter?

I couldn't hear much difference when I tried Slate's VTM. But then again I guess it depends what you want out of a tape emulator. Some want that rich warm 70s vinyl/tape sound, whereas others just use it for saturation in order to achieve loudness.
Also what genre of music plays a role here as well. Rock/pop seems to usually aim for that clean, pristine sound, whereas jazz/soul/funk and hiphop seems more interested in that raw dirty sound:
