He says nothing about "synths" but used the term "VST instruments" which could be just about anything that makes sound.I'm hoping to make some relaxation music with ambient, pads, soundscape type musical noise, I wondered what the best VST instruments would be, what do people think ? Really looking for mellow sounds.
Hope that's not too vague/general, I'm just doing it for fun !

Oh, and for the record, here is what the OP said in his original post.

I'm currently creating what I call "ambient" music, for lack of a better term (atmospheric may be more accurate, I suppose), but with a bit more melodic, harmonic and emotional content from what I've heard in this basic genre.
Personally, I don't care what this or that music fits into this or that label! I find the the whole concept of specific pigeonholing of any art ridiculous (but it's a time-saver when discussing). And maybe my musical explorations fall into "new age" or whatever other label designations from time to time - and I don't care! I'm just creating music that hopefully moves the heart and mind. So if it has "babbling brooks" or forest sounds, or city sounds, or trippy space sounds, or orchestral sounds - it's all part of a musical performance that hopefully results in a fun, enlightening, emotional or interesting experience for the listener.
I do like to take the listener on a journey with a beginning, middle, climax or two, denouement, and ending. (thinking of tracks with movements, like Rudgren's "A Treatise on Cosmic Fire", older Yes and Genesis albums/songs, symphonic music, etc. - I'm coming from a prog rock perspective). What category all this fits into - I couldn't care less, but I call it "ambient".
As for the the BEST synth for this type of sound, I'd say explore what you have. I like Zebra, Korg WaveStation (with magnifier!), Synth1 (rarely these days), and samplers, and romplers like Nexus have a place too. Art Pyrite, with its user added samples, looks interesting also! But the BEST idea in this style, for me, are the wave sequencers, like WaveStation. Evolving soundscapes and atmospheres are key.
I really don't put nearly as much focus on simple sounds drowned in FX, as some here, but there is a definite place for good FX like Valhalla Shimmer, and long delay loopers, etc.
So, I say it's more about a state of mind and looking for the ambience aspects of whatever tools you have. And if you want to buy a specific synth to help, look for those that include wave sequencing (I don't know their names to suggest) with good modulation options, especially in LFOS (as someone else mentioned), and then a choice selection of FX to further expand those cool sounding synths/romplers/samplers! That's a winning plan, in my mind!
All the best!

Yes, including synths, which people have recommended and he has responded to. Seriously, what is it when you insult Omnisphere that people just have to be right about something else?wagtunes wrote:Oh, and for the record, here is what the OP said in his original post.

Well, X-Mas must be right around the corner.
(The 'X' being with crossed arms and clenched fists that is.
And that all from such a peaceful subject!
Happy Holidays and Peace to All!

in Wagtunes' case he is simply shilling on behalf his own commercial interests (sells Omnisphere presets).ghettosynth wrote:Seriously, what is it when you insult Omnisphere that people just have to be right about something else?

That's okay, I won't expect an apology for having insulted me as a musician. It's pretty much par for the course around here.
Oh, and Daags, I'm not shilling for anything so put a cork in it.

I'm not hearing that one at all... every demo I have heard sounds uninspiring and most of them flat out bad (as in unmusical). I downloaded the demo cause the GUI is interesting, but after 30 minutes of playing it, deleted it.wagtunes wrote:Now, you want a great synth for doing ambient music, even though I suspect the filter is mediocre at best? Aparillo. That thing just plain rocks and isn't hard to program never ending soundscapes. I think Sugar Bytes has a real winner with this one. I'll be turning to it a lot.

It is special for people selling soundsets...ghettosynth wrote:The point is that the multi layer in Omni is nothing special.
Generally speaking, I would much rather layer sounds in my DAW... For me, Bitwig is a much better instrument for layering sounds than something like Omnisphere. Not only can I use any VST's I want, but one layer can modulate another layer.
