How To Make A Noise has been updated.
Before I tell you about the changes, I want to be absolutely clear about what has NOT changed. The free version of the book which has been available since early 2005 is still available (and will remain available for free download).
I hope that's sufficiently clear. Now let me tell you what's new.
The book has been extensively revised, updated, and reformatted. The revised and updated book will now available in hard copy format from leading book retailers such as Amazon from August 2007 for £9.95/$14.95.
With the new content, and the new layout, the printed version is now nearly 300 pages long (the free version is just over 100 pages). In particular, in the new printed version you will find:
>>more content, including four refills (which I will explain in a moment)
>>more graphics (and all of the existing graphics have been completely redrawn), and
>>more sounds (over 300 patches are now featured in the book)
If you want to have a look at the table of contents and a sample chapter to see what is covered by the new book and how it now looks (it does look VERY different from the current version), then you can download these from: http://www.noisesculpture.com/htman
With all of the updating, I've also updated the patches that accompany the book. The number of patches featured in the book has increased by about 50% to over 300. I have written to all existing purchasers of the patches to tell them how to get an updated set of patches for free. If for any reason you are one of these people but my email hasn't got through, then please get in touch (and let me have a copy of your original receipt for identification purposes).
There are four refills which are included in the book (in addition to the other new content). These will be made available for free download on September 1, October 1, November 1, and December 1, respectively. By buying the book you get the refills much sooner (as well as getting all the new content and other good stuff).
Although the refills will give you are large chunk of new content for free, there is still a lot of other new material in the printed version of the book. In particular the book includes a new synthesizer (Surge from Vember Audio) and the book also discusses many new areas. This new material will be exclusive to the book: there will be no free option.
If you want to get hold of the printed version of the book, the best way is through Amazon which you can reach by going to http://www.noisesculpture.com/htman and following one of the links.

Hi Simon, I bought the book at the end of july at Amazon (still waiting for delivery).
Does it mean I'm getting the old edition or is it already the new one?
Thanks,
Mario

I'm sorry to hear you haven't received your copy yet. The book has just been published so I think it is still taking a few days for supplies to get through from the printers. While it's no consolation to you, I do know that other people have received their copies.
Anyway, to your question: yes, you will receive the updated version. The only thing that hasn't been updated is the free version of the book.
Cheers
Simon

Thanks a lot Simon, this is great news for me. I see this is the first printed and commercial edition, right? I feared this was an update and I was loosing it for a matter of days. The problem with Amazon delivery seems related to various strikes at Royal (Great Britain) mail services... so I could not get them for my vacations...

You're right, Mario. This is the first printed/commercial edition. You are not missing out on anything (well... apart from receipt of the book due to postal strikes in the UK).mabian wrote:Thanks a lot Simon, this is great news for me. Mine arrived a week later than it should; too late because I was already on vacation, but I can get deep with it now
It's a very interesting book, absolutely worth having it on paper!
Same for the Cakewalk synth book; being SONAR 7 possibly soon on the streets (I hope) who knows if you'll need to "refill" again that book as well, Simon :>

If Cakewalk make any changes to the synthesizers covered by Cakewalk Synthesizers: From Presets to Power User, then there will be another update.mabian wrote:Same for the Cakewalk synth book; being SONAR 7 possibly soon on the streets (I hope) who knows if you'll need to "refill" again that book as well, Simon :>
