Maybe this kind of thing has been dealt with before, but . . . for what it's worth:Beardedone wrote:I think a theme defined in purely musical terms is needed. A glancing tribute to Hanslick, if you will. As long as we have a clear definition of the musical requirements such as peppy19y described and appropriate - loops is a good idea) then I am sure even the most theory resistant will benefit.
Best,
Gordon
Of course one problem with "No Loops" is -- how can you tell -for sure- if someone makes an issue of it and challenges an entry because of it? I wouldn't mind the restriction myself (though I don't think it's necessary), but I also wouldn't expect moderators to judge that; so it shouldn't, I think, be a definite DQ "rule."

Here's a suggestion for next month, seeing as it is holiday for lots of peeps.
To avoid confusion (and mindless musikmaking in the midst of summer), why don't all the people who *plan* to participate post a warning that they will.
That way we can all vote for anyone without wasting time in a long Gossip thread (hey, we can cut and paste our favorite bits from the June gossip). No entries actually need to be made - I am sure Markleford's radio can just do a random production made from each person's previous entries.
As for those in Australia and other places where summer is, uhm, winter, er, just do something different. Like make snow angels or learn to play bagpipe. Or whatever.
Oh, and the theme should be "99 luftballoons and not one in my color".

Maybe it's a bit draconian. As long as the piece fits the thematic requirement. Also remember voting will depend on the ability of the judge to determine compliance. This might be a big drawback for some.
So, wha' d'ya thingink?

Norockstar_not wrote: Peppy,
Do you mean we shouldn't use loop libraries, or snippets of songs as in Techbot's example?
Unless you copy Techbot's entire song. The whole thingie, that would be OK, as it is then not a sample, but the whole shemolly. Besides, nobody would notice unless maybe 30 of us did this, then it might sink in; hey, I've heard that song somewheres before (?)...
By looped samples I meant to "not use pre-sampled segments of the chords need in the chord progression, but to think it out yourself and make these yourself." Of course, some loops would be created inherently by the song's composer, but not taken from a loop library in order to meet the terms of the musical guidelines.... As embelishments and variations, anything goes, but the objective could be to try to follow the musical guidelines by making those parts yourself....
etc...

True, without the sheet music who can tell. It could sound out of tune or awash in pads, etc...
Oh well, I was trying to give an idea of compositional approach rather than cut and paste...
But then I will probably not participate I am embarassed that I did not get a single vote this month, and am the only one at that

Thanks to all that voted. I believe what this shows is that even behind the most annoying, over exposed and self absorbed musical artists there is talent that shines through which eventually boosts these people to the positions they occupy. Even on KVR...
And now for the surprise: I will use my prize on my real major label release.
i am unclear about what I won though...

No, Paulie Phonic and Seus Hawkins were also voteless. They just got disqualified for not voting: you didn't!peppy197 wrote:But then I will probably not participate I am embarassed that I did not get a single vote this month, and am the only one at that

I still think it is a worthwhile challenge. Does anyone else think a contest defined compositionally along the lines Peppy and I have suggested is viable.
Peppy Don't worry about the voting. Your track was good. There are a lot of worthy tracks every month that get passed over for no coherent reason.
Best,
Gordon

Hey do i get to pick the next month's competition challenge? I have an idea I've been itching to see since i started entering these. It hasn't been done and it is broad enough everyone could have a fair shot at winning.
