Thanks for the feedback, as I have no Linux experience and limited user exp. on a couple of Unix boxes at work I think I'll just stick in my Windows safety zone for now.
As XT is all about user options this seems like a correct direction to head, and adding a new base of user can only benefit everyone in the long run.

Then once you get the details ironed out..........

All true comments about Linux above. I'd like to add a couple of thoughts. A possible reason that Windows appears simpler at the application level is that the size of the user base and the stabillity of the platform (winxp has remained relatively unchanged since SP2 came out a year ago?). Any of us who really get down to any kind of low latency work on a PC have spent unpaid hours troubleshooting our setups. A computer is a complicated piece of machinery so to ask it to do anything but the simplest and widest used tasks is going to require at least some special knowledge. That said, Linux is still a good deal trickier than OSX or Windows.
This brings me to why I think Linux shows so much promise as a digital audio platform. Co-operation is required for Opensource software to develop into anything at all whereas a largely commercial development base such as what Windows has tends to limit usefull collaboration. To understand the difference compare ASIO with JACK in terms of a low latency driver model. I know the comparison is a bit apples to oranges but, case in point there is no Windows 'orange' to JACK. If popularity grows the installers will become easier and setups will be more standardized to meet the demand.
I feel so cold.

And more muso type users will develop better (less science based) distros with all the fine tuning already done for you.

The more people supporting it at this point, the better imho.

In the long run, having an OS that's totally dedicated to music production, simply has to be better than present systems. A good setup would be not much different to an operating system built in to hardware.

Ah well, I guess it all remains to be seen. I wonder what Windows Vista will really be like, how much it'll cost, how many updates will be needed to satisfy every type of user, and how bloated it'll be as a result. And how many people will still be clinging to XP, 4 years from now. Apple will still be squeezing blood out of every loyal user, every time they change something else, and users will keep paying it so they don't have to use Window$.

Me? I really want a third option, even if it means re-learning stuff and maybe sacrificing some software. I recon that stripping options back to a bare minimum, generally makes me more creative with what I have, so that's no bad thing.

I'm certainly going to give it a good go.

popular science? more like, "nerdular nerdence!"

Surely we can build our own Distro just for EXT2, That would make it easier for people who wanted to cross over.

I just installed Fedora core3, and then the planet ccrma collection of music software. If I'd been intalling Fedora on a clean machine (without windows), installation would have been as simple as clicking a few "ok" buttons. It made installing XP look like rocket science. The hard bit was making it all dual boot, but as I installed linux onto it's own hard drive, this was also easier than I expected.

The Planet CCRMA bundle was then installed into Fedora. This added a new low latency Kernal and the software bundle.

It'd be really good to produce a similar bundle, comprising energy XT, a good set of plugins, and a selection of other good linux based software, the JamIN mastering suite for instance. It'd take somebody who really knows Linux well to do it though.

Installation is getting much easier I think.

fake wrote:Thanks jorgen for the info. It was puzzeling me how you would do the vst bit as steinberg want to be paid a licence fee to re-distribute it. Receptor and the studio to go package have to pay that.
It seems from reading about it that some dev's think they can ignore that fact and re distribute the vstsdk with their product.
Receptor does not include the VST SDK and Muse Research does not pay anything to Steinberg. I don't know the technicalities, but the VST host on Receptor is not based on open source GPL code so the problem you refer to doesn't arise.
 OK

Just to hop in for a second.
Been using Suse 10 for a couple weeks (finally got me a 17" HP laptop for experimenting) and I must say I find KDE more logical and easy to use.
The again. I am kind of weird and unlogical :hihi:
Still waiting for EXT2 and my new apartment´s keys
Gotta go for now. Greetings to Jorgen and every one.
