Oh I see..amoebe wrote:I think he tried to say that us 'tech' folk never will be able to recreate the true trumpet sound and should stick to our synths.
Jolly good of him to point out the absolutely obvious for us though!

Anybody know how to get the aftertouch working on a new keystation 49e? I just bought one, installed it on my XP box, and it all seems in order, except that I can't get aftertouch to happen.
Yes, I've checked the AT box.
Btw, aftertouch doesn't work in any softsynth.

CME keyboards need AC power supply in order to get the aftertouch working. Is it the same for M-Audio? Did you check the manual?

Hey, Guido. Lovin' B3!My spies inform me that ZioKiller wrote:CME keyboards need AC power supply in order to get the aftertouch working. Is it the same for M-Audio? Did you check the manual?
Anyway, I did indeed RTFM. I'm running it via USB, and everything else works admirably. The pitch and mod wheels -- my first, w00t! -- are flawless.
But oddly enough, neither the manual nor the M-Audio web site mention aftertouch; but the online stores and my friendly local Guitar Center sales buddy insist that it does. I think I'm either the victim of a misinformation campaign (*cough* Monster Cable *cough*), or I'm more clueless than usual.

I was testing B3 with E-MU Xboard 49 and it was nice. Thanks
Dunno, I'm not a trumpetist, so I know nothing how it really should sound
But I'm liking this plug.
A guy with serious GAS and lots of unused VSTs. But if I someday need them...

it's track 3 from a jon faddis cd called "hornucopia." be careful about this cd: there is a dreadfully awful rap about bebop on one track. but everything else is super great.

I wasn't aware the 49e had aftertouch... I needed an aftertouch capable controller a few months back and the only ones that i found in a similar price range that had it were the CME and the EMU (which is what I ended up getting)Jafo wrote:Hey, Guido. I've no experience with any real life brass isntruments, but this trumpet sounds great to me, way more expressive than anything sample based i've tried. TBH, I've not really much need for a trumpet synth right now but its just so much fun to play i'm sure i'll find a reason to use it

its real vs plugin, both played live. trumpet is a yamaha 6335 and the plugin is being played by a yamaha wx5.
i didnt try and do exact licks i just did a loose trading and the 2 blend together near the end and then its just milestone taking it out.
i think both the similarities and differences are astonishing, but the wx5/milestone is sure easier to play, my trumpet chops arent happenin today.

Dude, nice blowing!! I thought the plugin sounded great with your real trumpet.Tony Ostinato wrote:http://www.geocities.com/tonyostinato/m ... ndfake.mp3

As a fellow trumpet player, I really enjoyed that. I need to get some recording equipment setup so I can play too.
Phil.

That has a lot more to do with bad sequencing rather than bad samples. I mean, you need good samples will only take you to a certain point, but if you haven't listened to the real instrument often and know how it works, good samples mean nothing.Tony Ostinato wrote:I'll give a 3 hour lecture anytime why sampling sucks at brass emulation.
yeah, a sampled trumpet sounds perfect as long as you only play one note.
these guys always send me things they think are good, done with various sample libraries, and im sorry i have yet to be able to resist laughing, seems like each one is worse than the last.
the one time i was fooled by a fake trumpet/mute was tina turners sax player and he was using a wx11 and a vl1, not samples.
i have yet to be fooled by a sampler even once.
i would be quite pleased to leave all the sampler talk in the other threads and keep it the heck out of this one.
and
"people occasionally posting about the most mundane brass-related stuff passed off like it's some big discovery. that makes me laugh..."
was just pure ignorance, we arent talking about these things on their own we are talking about modeling them.
lets be reminded that while there are many companies making physical trumpets, heck they are even on sale at wall mart, there has yet to be one convincing trumpet built in PHYSICS itself. I was a little suprised to see someone prefer the artturia brass trumpetphysics model but id say that this is the best physics trumpet model so far, and only by overanalysing every possible trumpet nuance can you improve these things, and theres no limit how far you can go.
and that my friend makes this historical and significant.

heres a good faq with a subsection on why sampling is so limited in these areas.
http://www.patchmanmusic.com/WindControllerFAQ.html
im talking live performance primarily also, no editing or keyswitching or time stretching doo dads, just an intuitive play it like you feel "instrument".

Keyswitching IS realtime. The fact is that the most common MIDI controller for computers is a keyboard. In order to play realistically from just notes, there has to be some sort of "brain" to the VSTi to imitate expressions of whatever instrument the VSTi is modeling.Tony Ostinato wrote:im talking live performance primarily also, no editing or keyswitching or time stretching doo dads, just an intuitive play it like you feel "instrument".

yes, id get onboard for a keyswitching, or cc#, assignable, for glissando.
and as i was sayin before itd be great if whenever the pitch bend is within 1 semitone up and 2 or maybe even 3 semitones down it was smooth, and then outside of that range have it like it is now.
those would be my top 2 wishes although the pitchbend thing is first on my list, i think that would really really help.
despite its looks the wx5 is a keyboard, with pitch bend and breath control and a thumb wheel that ive assigned to vibrato which i didnt use during the demo, so its nothing a good midi keyboard wouldnt be that incapable of doing.
