1989 on an Atari. Pro24 then Cubase v1. I quite liked that system - with a handful of keyboards, it was amazing what you could do with midi only.
Started before that with one of those Yamaha QY sequencers, and a lowly Atari was a revelation after using a 2-digit LED screen (if you can even call it a screen...)

1991 (I think) Amiga and SoundTracker, I made some awful attempt at copying Gary Clail and On-U Sound System, throwing in some Stars Wars samples "Red 5 standing by" and recording it to C90 (which I still have somewhere).

18 years later, I'm still making cover versions

the QY sequencers didn't come about till the 90's. do you mean the "QX" sequncers?

i think it was around 1990 for me when i got a Kawai K1 and a Q-80. from there i quickly upgraded to a Korg Wavestation and by about '92 i had a big bulky Windows machine running Cubase 1.0.

winter of '93 i took a computer music class at Michigan State and aced it with no problem (i think they had MOTU Performer for Macs in the lab as well as an EPS rack, a D50, DX7, and some Casios...).

1986. Using AtariST and Steinberg's Pro24, later Hybrid Arts Platinum and recording midi (samplers, fm, various analog synths, real instruments) and mixing down to a pcm recorder - later a dat. Around that time, also had Dr. T, M, and Digidesign Softsynth.

1997: SB AWE64 and a sequencer from Voyetra called Digital Orchestrator (midi + 4 mono audio tracks). The machine was 200MHz AMD K6(?) with 32MB RAM and I believe a 2GB hard drive.

i BASIC music counts, i guess the mid to late 80's
if we need midi then pro 24 on my atari
if we talk sound i guess 1995 or so with a 8 bit non duplex soundcard

I started in 1993 or 94 on the Amiga.
I bought TechnoSound Turbo sampler(cartridge and software) and took a couple of months to figure out I needed a sequencer also.
I ended up using Octamed untill 2000 when I switched to PC.

1994 on the TRS-80, then soon after on Fasttracker in DOS, and quickly after that, ReBirth in win95.

I wasn't serious about music with C64
I wasn't ready yet when Cubase1 PC came out
I think it was around '95 when I begin to make 'finished' tracks

The mid-1980s with a hardware sequencer (I think it was made by Alesis). I soon bought an Atari ST with Dr. T's sequencer. I also used a 4-track cassette to add non-midi instruments such as acoustic drums, guitar and vocals. I later moved on to Cakewalk and a PC.

When did you begin making computer music?
