Hell yeah!

@Mac: you can't reinvent the wheel when all possible sounds with Synth1 are already done :D

Post

You can't reinvent it, but in this context - in my opinion - you have to prove you can build one...

Post

Touche, I guess :-) Though it would be hard to tell if the sound is "handmade" in this case.

Post

Yep... that's why I decided to ignore sound design as a parameter for my votes

Post

Jeez this is was hard! ... But if I didnt decide tonight, I fear I would never find the time.

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to these tracks .. in shifts!!! .. over the past week and a half. Incredible stuff! ... please dont anyone take any criticism too hard, because this collection is superb from top to bottom, left to right, or any other way you want to throw it ... and probably, no criticism would have occurred if the standard I was comparing stuff to was not so incredibly high ... even the guys who regularly produce great work for OSC surpassed themselves!

It would be easier to pick the tracks which did nothing for me in some positive way ... cos there are none! Proud to be a part of it!
So here goes .....

Back to the Groove - K-Bee ... Groovy indeed! ... Good range of quality sounds appropriate for the track's style, and solid mix overall! Bass particularly effective.

The Last Synth On Earth - Totolitoto ... Superb ... great sounds and an arrangement which invites the listener to come close enough for a kick in the teeth! ...great range of sounds ... I tend not to compare OSC tracks with work of established artists ( except The Residents : D ) but this one somehow took me back to when I went to see orbital's last ever gig ( which turned out not to be the last ever ... liars!! ;) )

Dreaming At Dusk - Abstractcats ... Punchy and forthright track! Some strong and interesting sounds, I like it a lot, but it just needs a litle something else.

Feeling of Weirdness ... shroom_feverish ... lovely percussive track with rich sounds, nice use of individual sounds playing across a wide pitch range.

Karma Sutra - V'ger ... Nice build up to a gorgeously produced, well crafted track reminiscent of an epic movie.... lots of light and shade in there.

Impromtu 1,2,3, - mrblitz000 .... once again mrblitz cleverly messes with scales and messes my head up more with a handful of sounds than most folks will manage with a bucketload

Wide open - Orbik .... comes crashing in with a real statement of intent! Brilliant track, brilliant sounds, brilliant arrangement and production.... what more can I say?

Visions of a Seagull - Nahkronoth... lovely sounds, cool atmospheric, spacious track ... particularly love the bass.

Thus Spoke Piazzola - Stelpton ... This is excellent. Great sounds, well developed melodies, and a brilliant composition overall, and great production ... great work!

The crimson - guitarbro ... Musically, very interesting! The rich tones of the lead instruments kinda overshadows the other sounds though ...making it difficult to determine the range of sounds used, but credit to you for being brave enough to submit a track wi NO Fx!

Final Frontier ... MajorBloodnok ... nice mix of gentle spacey and thick sounds, and cool change of pace about 1 min in.

Synth1 thingamabob - ah_dziz ... I like this one! Good range of interesting sounds, great use of percussion, good production and an arrangement which moves along nicely.

Sunny Ode - dwsel ....definitely sunny! ... and a little bit folky as well .... and a sound which is so like a vocal, I thought you were cheating at first! Mix and production could be better.

Nucleus1 - cosmo1 ... I love it! ... Amazed this has no votes! ... its def top ten for me,

R2L4 - kaiyoti ... Great arrangement, and some cool sounds combining to give us guitars, brass and the red army choir! Very impressive, but productionwise, has a bit of a 'crushed' feel. shame because it is a powerful piece of work!

Nice Patch Shame about the Song - Mouxbar ... Some great sounds, and the percussion has a real slap to it, chunky and smooth at the same time, good production.

Many as One - Xenobioz ... Clever and engaging composition, full of suspense. Good range of solid sounds. Great production. Love those ethnic type instruments ... this track sell Synth1 to me .. even though I know it's free! ... fantastic! ... brilliant track! ... about 10 minutes too short!

Lighthouse Island - Mac of BIOnighT ... Beautiful and evocative, and lovely evolving arrangement of sounds ... Superb production and with 32 x Synth1, more than enough quality sounds there, and well worth the twenty minutes ... difficult to find fault, but I like a challenge ... ;) .... so, if I must, you're still too hung on the pentatonic for most of the track .... I would love to lock you and mrblitz in a room together for six weeks! I think what you guys would create between your opposite extremes would be worth the the room rent and the food to shove through the letterbox!

Follow the Groove - HiEnergy... yeah, groovy as well ... in a beatifully cheesy way ... wouldn't be out of place on a Harry Hill sketch, some great melodic passages.

Land of Green Ginger - Mr Wobble .... Excellent range of convincing sounds, some particularly impressive! Great production, ... if thats a chocolate ad, I want some!

13 Moons and a Sun too - MA-Simon .... This is a new brand of madness surely! ... absolutely insane arrangement, and some sounds that most others would either tweak drastically or throw away! ...gets at least a point for sheer originality as I dont think I've heard anything like this in my life ... at least not anything I liked! ... I'm really glad you kept losing your presets!!

21 Synths 1 - Wakkadude ... Potentially a great track, but lost a bit in the mix ... those guitar sounds are great, but sound like they've been eq'd a bit too severely .... I would be interested in hearing this again with a remix Wakkadude! ... or hearing what you have when all the fx are disabled... honestly!

AlphaSynthExpress - AbstractCats ... Some bold sounds in there, and interesting rhythmic work. Production is good, but leaves space for some fatter bolder-in-a-different-way sounds to break things up a bit.

Another Soundtrack - Yeager ... Great quality sounds! Excellent production, would have liked to hear more in the way of melody, but hey, that percussion!!! ...great arrangement, fantastic track! ... this one has me in a different dillemma every time I listen ... there are areas where it is second best to a great many tracks in this comp, but .... overall, it does the business! ... I love it, and I'm amazed that there are only a modest amount of FX ... like, wow, you really CAN do that with synth1!!

And so, enough of words, here's the numbers.

Another Soundtrack - Yeager ..................... 5

Many as One - Xenobioz ............................... 4

Thus Spoke Piazzola - Stelpton ................... 3

Wide open - Orbik ........................................... 3

The Last Synth On Earth - Totolitoto .......... 3

Karma Sutra - V'ger ........................................ 2

13 Moons and a Sun too - MA-Simon ........... 2

Lighthouse Island - Mac of BIOnighT .......... 2

Nucleus1 - cosmo1 ........................................ 1

Hey Tattie, thanks for the votes!! :) I can't iron your stuff, I'm sorry, my week is full already, but I'll wash your floors once a year ;-)
Oh, and this is for you ;-P http://www.macvibes.com/TEMPORSOUNDS/WA ... OnighT.mp3 (from 2008) :D

Hey, I did vote Nucleus1! :x

Post

And bloody right as well! :hihi:

Post

... Actually, sorry Mac, some of those notes were written on Wednesday ... and although I've listened to Nucleus1 3 times tonight alone, its just one of these tracks which I dont have anything to say about other than it just makes me pull faces and want to turn the volume up :hihi: ... so I didn't bother to check the uncounted votes and amend my comment ( or lack of ) :)

On the constructive side though, I think its all about the use of two sounds at the right place which sneak it in my top ten.

Actually, my post (the one with the votes) was written on Tuesday, but it's just a coincidence that there was nothing in it giving that away in the post

Post

Aye well, I was a bit busy celebrating on Tuesday ... got the film sountrack framework pieces finished .. and decided to step away from the PC for as long as I could bear! :hihi:

Tell you what though, I dont mind admitting that some of the stuff in this comp has been a source of influence/inspiration for the soundtrack work ... even though I haven't used Synth1 at all for what I've been putting together! :-o

But if I get this chance again, and a more generous deadline, expect me to be hassling folks for their patches!! :hihi:

Post

Great! When are we gonna be able to hear some bits w/ trailers?

Mac of BIOnighT wrote:I must say that this time my votes are entirely based on the music itself and not on sound design
Mine always are. I wouldn't know how to separate things in my head. A piece of music can be a study in sound design and contain out of this world programming - but if it doesn't appeal to me it doesn't get my vote. Simple as that.
On another note, I'm not used to getting that many votes so my sincere thanks to everyone who cared about "Back To The Groove" (which contain presets btw :hihi: )

Post

Ok, the hardest thing here, was to leave tracks out.
These are the ones I liked best, for all kinds of different reasons...

feeling_of_weirdness_-_shroom_feverish 4
synth one thingamabob-ah_dziz 4
TheLastSynthOnEarth - Totolitoto 4
Karma Sutra - V'ger 3
LIGHTHOUSE_ISLAND--Mac_of_BIOnighT 3
Wide Open - orbik 2
Hyacinth1 - tattiemannie 2
Many as One - Xenobioz 2
Back To The Groove - K-Bee 1
Land of Green Ginger - Mr Wobble 1

These OSC's tracks are getting better all the time, and the voting gets harder. :(

Post

Thanks for the vote, Yeager! :) You're right, voting is definitely getting harder :(
