It's basically a tape emu, yes. Fine.
But it can be raped into being so much more if you mis-use it right.
The goodies hiding behind the Service Panel (anyone remember AM|Track?) let you use it as an EQ, a saturator, dynamics tool, transient shaper... And that is just in Studio mode, completely ignoring the Flanger and Delay modes.
I don't see it comparing 1:1 to anything else available, so I'm not getting into this better/worse argument.
I'm currently creating a line of presets for the combination of Superior Drummer 2's Metal Foundry default kit with Satin. Just for fun.
How it's meant to work: group all the microphone types inside SD2, so all Kick mics go to one output, all Snare mics go to another etc. (you get it..), which leaves you with 5 Stereo outputs going to your host: Kick, Snare, Toms, Overhead (incl. HH) and Room.
Add to that a folder track to submix them all.
Insert 6 instances of Satin, one on each single track and one on the bus, then load the presets.
All coming from the same source material and 6 instances of Satin, altogether using something between 1% to 3% of my Mac Mini's 2-core i5.
Think of Satin as a tape plugin if you must... but don't think of it as a tape plugin.
Me wantee.
Thanks for the amazing examples!

I actually meant that I don't care whether Stain perfectly emulates certain existing hardware tape machines or not, maybe I used the "authenticity" word wrong. I have first discovered the transient handling/bass warming effect in Reelbus and only after that I read that this effect is attributed to real tapes, so now it is what I expect from any tape emu. Now I'll test it by myself, thanks EvilDragon!Agility wrote:I don't see how you can't care about authenticity and then want the qualities of authentic tape done well, ie Transient smearing and low end bump, where most tape Emu's fail, most just smear things. Reelbus to me isn't very good at transient smearing IMO nor adding low end weight, it's more just like an EQ in that sense IMO where as the tape bump works in a different way or atleast collectively with the other qualities of tape. Satin is alot more powerful and sounds great, like I say they did not dissapoint.recursive one wrote:It seems that everybody in this world but me has already tested Satin. I don't own the Slate's tape thingy, but I wonder how good Satin is compared to TB Reelbus. I don't care much about authenticity, what I use the Reelbus for is to soften transients and add some low-mid warmth on 2buss so I wonder whether Satin can do the same thing but with better quality (that is, better enough to justify the price gap) and also whether it is more CPU efficient (Reelbus is a considerable hog at my system and it keeps me from using Reelbus on tracks, I have to replace it with VoS Ferric which I like less soundwise).
You may think you can fly ... but you better not try

It's done manually, but Urs is usually blazing fast so it shouldn't take too longAgility wrote:

Serial is sent instantly, but I used to send download links manually. I guess no need for that anymore

- made VU meter AES-17-compliant (+3dB) -> sine @ 0dbFS is now 0 VU
- fixed a couple of issues that could have caused crashes with Cubase or VST3 in general
- fixed delay-time calculation bug in sync mode
- fixed missing delay feedback buffer flush on bypass or mode switch
- included more presets
- manual update

Bought.
Installed the VST2 version now too, doesn't crash Cubase on close though VST3 does.
Thanks.

I have VTM and Satin running side buy side here, i actually like them both, a lot. As far as the tape emulations are concerned, there's not a lot of contest in it. They're both using pretty much the same amount of CPU power and they both sound smashing. I'm interested in what other owners of both plugs (in other genres) have to say about it all. I've been mixing predominantly very modern and bass heavy music for the last few months, i need a few spare days to spend working the tape emulations into the sound. I was only just getting the hang of digital, now I'm back with a friggon TAPE machine again!! LET'S DO THE TIME WARP BABY!
I was ready to sell VTM, but thinking I might keep it now. I tell you, the Slate VCC and VBC will be the last things you ever pry from my cold dead iLok. This hardware emulation saga is really lifting my music into a whole new realm. Love it! Wish my wife thought the same

Sasha, is the delay-time calculation bug in sync mode a fix for the issue I sent the wav file for yesterday?sascha wrote:Status update, taken from our changelog (next release candidate):

Much impressed with Satin so far, it's so much more versatile than I had expected
