Yes I agree the guy noodling away on the keyboard doesn't say anything really. He's just showing off. I prefer what the real bass player sitting to the right of him is doing.

With 5-string maximum, and what I can see of the piano/keyswitch assignments in the vids and pics.. I'm going to assume that drop B is the maximum drop tune. Not gonna work for me, unfortunately.
Metal and Prog folks are outta luck on this one, I guess.. bummer..

You mean "Djent" and "Experimental Super Low Frequency Prog Metal (Solo)/Djent".progtronic wrote:Metal and Prog folks are outta luck on this one, I guess.. bummer..
Becaus Progressive Rock definitely works FINE with 5-string. (heck even 4 string... the 70uies anyone?!)
And I've seen plenty of Djent bass players with 5-string basses as well... in fact, the "personification of Djent"'s (*cough* Meshuggah *cough*) bassplayer, Dick Lövgren, uses 5-strings.
One of the crazy people that "uses" a 6-string in a prog-metal band, is John Myung... and mostly only during solo work, not as "support". The "Djent" tuning comes from the baritone guitars (8 and 9 strings) anyway.
The all-bass "Djent" band, "Extinction Level Event" - uses 5-strings and sounds super low.
Mike Kerr from Royal Blood? 4 String...
Robert Trujillo (Metallica)? 5-string...
Geddy Lee (Rush)? 4 string and headless Steinberger
6-string basses are just as special as 8 and 9 string guitars IMO.
Yes, there are users that want that, there will always be interest for it. But really? This makes a VSTi "bad" (or worse) and "unusable" because the "feature/guitar is not available"?
Give me a break, please!

Yeah, but AFAIK downtuned from low B to low low F#.Compyfox wrote:And I've seen plenty of Djent bass players with 5-string basses as well... in fact, the "personification of Djent"'s (*cough* Meshuggah *cough*) bassplayer, Dick Lövgren, uses 5-strings.

If the range can be extended - that's fine, but I don't count on that (considering the fixed keyswitch positions).
And if not... Octave Pedal, anyone?

I should have said "Extreme Metal". And, yes.. generally Experimental in nature.Compyfox wrote:You mean "Djent" and "Experimental Super Low Frequency Prog Metal (Solo)/Djent".progtronic wrote:Metal and Prog folks are outta luck on this one, I guess.. bummer..

I usually tune to a drop A.. but also need to go lower once in a while.
Never said it was "bad" or "unusable".. it's just a preference. The Kontakt instruments I use, can't naturally (with built in scripting) tune as low as I need either.. but I have the option to use the overall tuning knob to down tune as much as I need. Results still sound great with higher sample rate libraries.
I figured with a fully configurable, physical modeling oriented VST.. I would be able to create crazy instruments (10+ string basses with really long necks and piano-like strings.. and whatnot), to fully realize my musical insanity.. I can dream, I guess.
Here's an example of a low-tuned track, I did a few months ago (maybe you can hear, what I'm basically going for.. using the Scarbee Rickenbacker on this one):

Given that adding additional strings or a longer neck would require changes to the UI graphical representation of the bass, I don't think you're going to see that in the initial release. It would be nice if they could at least expand the tuning range though.progtronic wrote:Yep.. this.EvilDragon wrote:Yeah, but AFAIK downtuned from low B to low low F#.Compyfox wrote:And I've seen plenty of Djent bass players with 5-string basses as well... in fact, the "personification of Djent"'s (*cough* Meshuggah *cough*) bassplayer, Dick Lövgren, uses 5-strings.

Doesn't look like the UI changes for the addition of a fifth string (on the four stings) anyway?.. but, yeah. More tuning options would be great.deastman wrote:Given that adding additional strings or a longer neck would require changes to the UI graphical representation of the bass, I don't think you're going to see that in the initial release. Thanks for the questions and for the requests of which I will make sure the team is aware.
For those unaware of the video demos we have available, there are quite a few on our YouTube channel, including this one which is part 1 of the Presets & Models:

i don't really go for very low tuning, so a 5 string is fine for me. as it is, MODO looks very tempting. it's a good thing i have until mid november to think about it. hopefully by that time more rock/metal demos come out.
@Peter, i assume the model selection will be extended with Custom Shop? seems like that would be a natural progression for MODO.

I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

Low B is ample low enough for the overwhelming majority of metal work.
It's just under 31Hz.
Most audio systems, even the more expensive ones, cannot even produce the fundamental properly - unless you spend $10,000 on a pair of K&H 420. I've literally heard dozens of studio subwoofers and I'm yet to hear one that goes lower than Low B and still manages to put out convincing power.
