I did read the GS thread, but he has been working on Serum for 4 years now, the most popular softsynth ever. Im sure he has some spare money in his pocket. I dont mind if he doesnt add the Fairchild tho (he even said the thing is really not that special) so any other vari mus would be fine.bmanic wrote: Tue Feb 27, 2024 7:24 pmI don't think people realize how much time Dave spent on the models that are included already. As far as I know, he literally built hardware clones of the devices he modeled, then measuring every single component and created his own mathematical models of each. Very similar workflow to what Andrew of Cytomic does (though I suspect Andrew is a bit more OCD about it all.. if that's even possible).jtsterays wrote: Mon Feb 26, 2024 1:29 am I am too, i want the saturator more than TC2 update but from what i read from GS, pretty sure they will be both released at the same time. There are still some big hitters missing in TC2 (LA3A, Fairchild, 33609...)
So getting a DMG Audio model of a Fairchild means Dave first needs to build one. I know he was contemplating it at one point but the cost is really high even just for the components of a modernized version and if it needs to be anywhere near "authentic" in terms of vintage sound output, then the costs skyrocket due to the shortage of those old tubes and the transformers.
The LA3A and 33609 should be much more feasible and hopefully we'll get those at some point. I'm also eagerly still awaiting the PYE compressor he was teasing many years ago.
Is TrackComp 2 by DMG Audio the best compressor?

Don't care about the best anymore.
If gives me right feeling and sound, it's best for the job
Vertigo VSC-2 - super easy, super sweet comp, bought it yesterday for 19,99 superb tool:

I really (like - REALLY) don't get people's obsession with Fairchild. the only conceivable reason reason for that is the physical nature of the machine (mammoth like. so it must produce equivalent sound, right ?). I haven't heard one in real life (as are 97% of people) but upon hearing it on youtube (highest quality) and upon heaaring downloadable processed samples.... it made me go "Meh". that meh was reaffirmed by Dave himself when he said "have you heard one in real life ? it IS doing something, it is just so... polite. if you can't hear the distortion what you got there is a basic stock compressor".bmanic wrote: Tue Feb 27, 2024 7:24 pmI don't think people realize how much time Dave spent on the models that are included already. I'd rather process with P2F NAM offerings (660/670) and then with some basic stock compressor.
TrackComp has well enough models to use (inc. the Zener-Winner)

Same, thats why i want to hear it, never touched a single hardware in my life. Im curious to why it is so special. It is good because of some dark magic itb has never been able to reproduced or because its 35k bones?eytanmich123 wrote: Wed Feb 28, 2024 6:36 amI really (like - REALLY) don't get people's obsession with Fairchild. the only conceivable reason reason for that is the physical nature of the machine (mammoth like. so it must produce equivalent sound, right ?). I'm interested in getting TC2 to streamline my process a bit. Rather than have a folder full of compressors, I like the idea of one Swiss army knife, heh.
I already have Track Limit so that'd get me a small discount

I've only ever played with a few clones (Fairman TMC and ADL670) and those were both quite characterful in their own respective unique way. Definitely not suitable for all material.. but the compression is not same as a basic DAW stock compressor. I know Dave used to go on these kinds of rants sometimes and I highly disagree with him on that matter. Heck, for a long time he was very much against doing any kind of deep analogue modelling at all, thinking it's all useless.. but then he made Trackcomp 2 and sort of revised his views on this (that being my interpretation of the events).eytanmich123 wrote: Wed Feb 28, 2024 6:36 am I really (like - REALLY) don't get people's obsession with Fairchild. the only conceivable reason reason for that is the physical nature of the machine (mammoth like. so it must produce equivalent sound, right ?). The thing is though, you easily get caught up in whatever your own genre of music is and your own sound aesthetic. This automatically makes it so that not all revered pieces of gear fit that sound aesthetic. It's the same exact thing with Synthesizers. There are plenty of synths that a huge majority of people deem supreme and classic yet I just go "meh..".
So while myself I'm not all that interested in a Fairchild emulation I do see the value in one. Speaking of which, I think Overloud made a pretty good Fairchild plugin. It even comes with 3 different versions that all act and sound very different from one another.

I like the Klanghelm MJUC mode 1 with almost no compression on the dial - sounded pretty much the same as the UAD Fairchild to me and I already had it and it was less money.
I’ve sent Trackcomp2 on vacation… a retreat… until I can get a new computer. It’s just too cpu hungry.

If that’s true, it’s going to interesting to hear about his approach on Serum 2, since he was brought onboard that project specifically for his analog modeling skill. I suppose he could choose various analog signal paths that he’s already modeled in the past, and creatively introduce them throughout the synth. Going to be interesting indeed, really looking forward to that one, whenever it finally arrives.bmanic wrote: Tue Feb 27, 2024 7:24 pm I don't think people realize how much time Dave spent on the models that are included already.
