Yep, I remember expecting 6 to come out sooner based on earlier releases. I'll be updating my license as well. Holy shit Reaper has been a bargain.

As I recall
- v3.78 were the last v3
- v4.78 were the last v4
- v5 exception going dot updates all the way
- v6.81 and version 7 pre enters

Curious if v7 theme is something I could stand watching. When reporting bugs to plugin vendors good to have something else to refer to also that support VST3. Reaper 4.78 I have does not, so one reason to upgrade possibly.

It's hard now to have something major enough to make a major version update. When not Waves approved, VST3 lacking, VCA faders not there, no ARA support, it was easier to motivate upgrade introducing those features. Something major happened that was obvious to everybody.

But a really nice new theme/skin where everything is clearly visible in mixer view, not this big black blob with nothing to guide eyes is certainly major to me. To sit and work 8 hours a day with something not pleasing to eyes, but really even hurting, and that is fixed - a major thing.
- if Cockos also looked closely to what other daws have as default toolbars to pick from avoiding having to make dive into Reaper internals to even get started, would be a good thing.

Trials I ran for v5 and v6 still made me feel I have to again dive into identifying all bitmaps used for mixer view and increase contrast to a grid of rectangles clearly appear and easy to spot as well as going into toolbar settings and find out the basic tools I want. An uphill battle the first thing.

If that is still missing after 20 years of development would be strange IMO.

it's really not that simple. over the last 15 years or so, i've probably tried every available reaper theme there is. none of them are right for me, so i had to try to roll my own. several days into that rabbit hole, having to figure out some cryptic proprietary scripting language (walter) and edit dozens/hundreds of pngs, and suddenly i had a newfound respect for theme developers, even if their themes don't do it for me.

plus, many aspects of the GUI cannot be touched by themes, and have to be addressed on an OS level (or not at all). it's a huge pain in the ass ... basically i have to run two different windows themes on my computer, a dark theme for reaper and a "normal" theme for everything else, simply because many big parts of the reaper UI cannot be themed by reaper (and don't necessarily adhere to windows theme's color logic in a predictable way ... for example, you can run a totally dark reaper+system theme, but still get jarringly bright white menus and fx list unless you know how to edit windows themes)

on the topic of reaper 7 theme ... it's unfinished i guess, but it's pretty terrible. the big dark void (mentioned by @lfm) problem is worse in v7 in a few ways. tons of unbroken empty space paired with cluttered controls that sit where they want whenever they want. plus, lots of discordant, half-baked ideas got shoved out the door (e.g. fader caps that are shiny metallic, yet also semi-transparent? fuckin pick one!)

reaper theme for the past few versions has felt like it is in this gray area (pun sort of intended?) where it cannot decide if it is a dark theme or a light theme. consequently, i feel it suffers the drawbacks of each, and gains the benefits of neither. and v7 is a continuation down this path from what i've seen so far.

i very much get the sense that white tie (the reaper UI designer), talented though he may be, does not actually use a DAW himself

About to give Reaper a try. Ultimately I want to get Ableton (when there's a sale). I've heard a lot of good things about Reaper. A good friend of mine swears by it.

That'd be cool, but I've personally never seen him using anything other than Logic.

I used to listen to his podcast and at some point several years ago he mentioned/praised REAPER and expressed thoughts of migrating from Logic, but I've never actually seen him make the transition.

The brown DAW theme seen in his videos was a theme for Logic.
Still distributed at the bottom of this page, although not compatible with the latest versions.

Does Reaper still force you to use that really "unusual" context-dependent MIDI editing system? I couldn't get over that but otherwise Reaper seemed fine to me.
